I know, it bugs me. I can understand with things like cream cakes, but sausage rolls and bread rolls? Why can't we do it?

Sell by dates dont mean much, especially since Marks and Spencers made them up as guidelines for consumers in the 1970s!

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.

I used to work on a production line packing microwavr eals for sainsburies and asda and places (mainly those 2). And we seriously spent half our time "re-sleaving" which was getting food that "past its date" romoving the cardboard, checking the item, and putting new cardboard sleaves with a new date on anying that was ok... Since then I haven't paid much attention to use by dates lol

If you go to a food bank though its almost all tinned and dehydrated stuff. In part due to shelf life but I think also for stage costs as meanthat they don't have to pay to run a fridge or whatever

Which Government?

How are we supposed to ensure people jump through the hoops they are being asked to in order to claim their benefits? I have to jump through hoops to get paid and to ensure I still have a job, similarly someone who is claiming benefits must jump through certain hoops. If there is no punishment, why should anyone bother doing anything to claim?

So I did, instead of putting them in the waste bin ready for black plastic bags I put them somewhere secret and soon the homeless and those on low incomes got free food
Because they don't want to be sued. Some places do create partnerships with local shelters and charities, but some charities don't want it. Oh, and what you did is called theft, and I'd expect you to get fired for gross misconduct at the very least.

^It shouldn't be theft though. It should be mandatory.

And there needs to be some legislation passed that allows supermarkets to give leftover food to the homeless/unemployed/low income families without fear of a lawsuit.

But it is theft. If I take a cake from the buffet at an event I work at, I will be disciplined for it - it doesn't belong to me.

What about when someone is sick and blames it on the food? Who decides what is a low-income family? Who will operate these centres? As soon as legislation is brought in, it is almost institutionalising the sector and accepting their existence as a top-up to the welfare payments.

They never knew and it wasn't like they cared anyway i was pretty much someone they forgot about as I spent most of my hid away in the back room so they didn't really care and it wasn't like the food was going anyway it was heading for the bin to be chucked out

Have you ever confused a dream with life? Or stolen something when you have the cash? Have you ever been blue? Or thought your train moving while sitting still? Maybe I was just crazy. Maybe it was the 60's. Or maybe I was just a girl... interrupted.
I know what it's like to want to die. How it hurts to smile. How you try to fit in but you can't. How you hurt yourself on the outside to try to kill the thing on the inside. I tried groups, didn't work out just made my depression a lot worse.

They have already agreed to 'take reponsibility' for their own intake.

Anyone who can't afford food, even if it's just for one month.

Charity/volunteers/churchs/maybe even job centres

The government already expects us to top-up using community resources.

Imperfection is underrated.

But it is theft, whether or not you perceive it to be. The law doesn't work as a "I don't want that to be law so it's not".

There are some projects set up to do something along these lines, but they're opt-in; Plan Zheroes is one that comes to mind. But as Claire said, what are the conditions? How do you decide which charities are good enough to get the donations?

You're right in that there should be incentives for companies to donate waste food, but the potential implications and costs of ensuring those are adhered to are high. The costs of ensuring there are no legal loopholes is in itself expensive. There's not a priority to make it happen at the moment - and who's going to take the lead?

I am in favour of companies doing this, I think it's a great idea, but there are logistical issues affecting it.
