I went to see it at midnight, and thought it was fantastic! I unfortunately did not have a chance to reread the book before seeing the movie, but it seemed like they did a pretty good job of sticking to the book.
I saw it in digital, not 48fps and 3D, but hopefully I'll be going back to see it, as I'm very curious about the higher fps.
*Extremely long review*
First I have to talk about actors. The two new actors that I thought were particularly good were Martin Freeman as Bilbo and Richard Armitage as Thorin. Martin Freeman was truly amazing. He was the perfect pick for this part. I already love him from Sherlock, and I thought I couldn't love him any more, but apparently I can!
Richard Armitage played a fantastic Thorin. He really portrayed the character well. The troubled leader.
I know there are some things that they added that weren't in the book, but it was mostly adding some details that weren't in the book, but were hinted at. Like Gandalf leaving to consult with the Counsel and such.
Also, Sir Ian McKellen is in it as Gandalf. Isn't that alone practically enough to make it a good movie? :P
I'm a bit of a film nerd, and that might be one reason why I loved this movie. It was beautifully filmed. The CG was really wonderful. When you think about how much work they put into some parts of it, it's truly amazing. Also, what we see of Smaug looks fantastic. I'm excited to see more of him.

I really don't see why people are saying it's horrible. One of their reasons is that it doesn't have the Middle Earth "charm" that the LotR trilogy had, but I don't agree with that at all. It is every bit as charming and beautiful as the trilogy was. The Hobbit is a more lighthearted story, but they're doing an excellent job of not making it corny.

All in all, I loved it! Fantastic movie, will be seeing it again.

I'm very curious to hear what other people have to say about it!

I thought it was okay. Obviously, Middle Earth is the best drug ever so I was still entranced for the whole thing.

I didn't see it in 3D because wearing glasses on glasses makes me get a headache and feel sick and such. However in 2D I felt like it was special effects for the sake of special effects, really. Most of it was very CGI'd, and yes, I guess they must CGI it to death because they can now, but I miss the days of where the orcs/goblins were actually people with makeup and then a bit of CGI.

However, it was a really good film, I loved being back in middle earth and Gollum was fantastic. They're really expanding on the back stories from The Silmarillion and the history and events of Middle Earth.

Overall, go see it. :)

I saw it yesterday and I have to say I really enjoyed it!

Loved hearing the music from the LOTR films featuring in their respective motifs again, I was hoping that would happen! (yeah I'm a silly geeky music graduate, it was the first thing I thought about )

Saw it tonight.

It was good. I actually think it would be better if I wasn't such a fan of the book. It felt at times like they were aiming at people who have seen The Lord of the rings films but never read any of the books so dragging in extra characters, tenuous hints about saroun, fili and kili are essentially merry and pippin, etc etc which aren't particularly necessary to the story in the hobbit (which is a kids book at the end of the day).

So yeah, at points I tried to view it as a film in its own right, rather than as a book adaptation - and then I thought it was brilliant. Saying that, the main events are still pretty true to the book.

Gollum is great (love Gollum), and I thought Martin freeman was exceptionally good (although occasionally too much like Frodo, he needs a bit more of his own personality in there).

I went to see it yesterday and just before the end the lights went up and the cinema - not the actual cinema of course, but a bossy alarm-type-voice - told us to leave the building due to 'unforeseen circumstances.' So I have no idea how it ends :/ rather annoying. But what I saw was amazingly epic.

I saw really negative reviews too, so went expecting it to be pretty poor. I was pleasantly suprised, I really enjoyed it. I know they are kind of dragging them out which is shame. But it was well done, and I loved it.

Is there a lot of singing?

I know I can't believe they are turning one little book into 3 movies - such a blatant ploy to rip us all off for more money. Is there really enough content to drag out into 3 films?

they've included things from the silmarillion and unfinished tails to flesh it out. I saw it last night and some parts do feel drawn out, but not as much as I had expected

^ That. Everything that's going into the three hobbit films appears in Tolkien's work somewhere, whether that be the Silmarillion or Unfinished Tales.

I, unfortunately have not gotten to read the book at all, but I absolutely love love loved this movie. I saw it in 3D and it was probably the best 3D I have ever seen.

My husband read the book and said it was rather well done and all of his favorite parts and everything was in there. It was a lot brighter than the other movies, which is something that I heard threw some people off, but I would definitely recommend seeing this movie. amazing

I saw this on Friday. I really loved it! I thought it was paced well (it certainly didn't seem like 2 hours and 46 minutes) and that none of it was actually boring. All the things tied in. I guess, though, that I don't really like films that rely only on action. I like an actual plot and background. Again, I thought it was really well done and I recommend it!

That. Although Peter Jackson always wanted to CGI them in LOTR, but the technology wasn't really good enough.

I still don't like that it has been dragged out to three films, which will probably all be about three hours long. Although they are bringing in other material to flesh the story out a bit, it does feel like a bit of a money-spinner...

Am I the only one who didn't like the almost complete overhaul of Bilbo's character? In the book he is a whiner, who spends most of the book complaining about every little thing. It worked because when he did show courage it really hit home, but it never got the same effect in the film. At least not for me.

I was a little bothered by that, yeah. It didn't ruin the movie for me or anything, but it certainly didn't feel like Bilbo. In the movie he was more like the bumbling comic relief. Also, is it just me or did it seem like he's not the main character in the movie? It seems like most of the focus is on Thorin. To be fair, it is Thorin's quest so you could argue that Bilbo is just along for the ride, but at least the book focused mostly on Bilbo and how the story unfolded from his point of view. In the movie it seemed like he got pushed into the background a lot.

Other than that I thought it was a good movie. I do have other minor complaints, like the fact that the story has been really dragged out (though it's at least good to know that they fleshed it out with stuff from other Tolkien works), the CGI orcs (I thought they looked much better and more realistic when they were actors in makeup), and I also felt that it didn't quite have the same aesthetic as LotR. It felt like it was set in an entirely different universe. But all in all, I think it was a very enjoyable movie, and I'll definitely be seeing the second one.

Loved it so much. I don't have a bad word to say about it (I'm glad it's split into 3 films since it gives time for other characters and storylines to be explored rather than sticking to the main goal which isn't exactly new - someone takes someone's home and they fight to get it back).
