1st year student loans

I sent an application of I'm in England as apposed to Scotland or Wales, on 20th June.

There was some mix up as my Dad is self employed so he sent his info in before my forms got there so they stupidly sent it all back and I had to resend with a cover letter saying I was applying etc

Anyway it's been more than 6 weeks so I rang them this morning to be told yes we have everything we need but there is a backlog. I spoke to someone who says they have theirs (they live in my area)

Hmm should I be worried? The guy on the phone was doing lots of umming when he was reading the notes

The people that sort out student loans can be like that and there is often a heavy backlog; I'd try not to worry unless you don't gt anything back in the next couple of weeks. If you don't then I'd take a trip to the council building where you sent your form to in the first instance.

Student loans, especially first year ones can take ages and try not to worry you but I know a lot of people that didn't getthem on time when I started first year but that didn't help because college didn't inform the loans people properly that we were back! If you sent it in on time then you should have your loan on time. If it was sent in late (I don't know the date it needs to be in, I sent mine off only a couple of days after I got mine some time back) you usually do but it may not all be totally set up.

Don't be worried until you're back at Uni.

It can takes ages to sort everything out, especially with all the students applying and the Uni's having to be involved etc etc. I can't remember how long it took me to hear last year, but I did hear eventually. I think I forgot about it.

Try not to worry yet, if you haven't had anything by the 1st September, ring and hassle them again. I know people who didn't get their loan until partway into the first semester, so it may be worthwhile getting yourself a bank account with an interest free overdraft, just in case for rent etc.

I would wait until you are at uni, student finance are extremely helpful at uni and will chase things up for you, they know what they are doing.

Both my loands had been messed up, the first being the tution fees were too high and then last year because my course details got messed up and my uni didnt notice until about 4 weeks after i started uni. Student loans were not helpful until the uni sorted it out for me and i got in it late october after start uni in the first week of septeber.

As Amy has suggested above make sure your student overdraft is set up as last year i didnt have it set up and caused many problems.

Im still waiting to hear back about my student fees being paid, so hopefully it will arrive before is start uni on the 10th. :)

Hope it gets sorted

I have a credit card which needs paying off O.o Bad idea. Ah well I'll be keeping a couple of days at my part time job.

However, I do live in my own flat with bf so yah no halls for me which may complicate things. I don't want us to run out of money eek

Anyway I shall listen to you wonderful people and try not to panic yet.

these things often take time... just because someone else has their info doesn't mean you should worry...

I'm going into third year this year and have no info about my loan yet... (bad news as my septemeber rent is looming)

but honestly just because you've got nothing yet doesn't mean you're not getting it... I do advice, however, that you keep ringing them now and then to keep the presssure on... also, if you are in the area processed by darlington (as I am ) tehn RING RING RING RING!!!! The whole trial thing they're doing is awful (even the loan company admits this if you press them lol), but you'l still get your loan eventually... in first year I got the letter 2 days before I moved into halls and still got my loan only a day late!
though in second year I had to apply 4 times!! (my step-dad is self-employed so i know what a trial getting that info to them is...). and didn't get my loan till october when I was underpayed, not getting backpay until march . however, I feel that may be an extreme event... and your uni will have TONNES of things in place to help you... mine has pritty much supported me through this summer as I couldn't find a job

anyway, good luck, but try not to worry they're probably just being slow

I seem to have a problem every year. First year it just took a while because it was my first time applying and i had to change my course. Last year my forms were late but that was my own fault for not sorting my course out soon and this year had a minor problem when they wrote and asked for prove of myparent seperation, i.e divorce papers. There not divorced, my mum died and my dad phoned up and told them because i was upset. Got my letter through that i might have to take to uni with me the other day though.

Your loan won't be paid till you've registered at uni though. Your uni has to tell them you've registered and then theres a date for the earliest it can be paid to you, mines mid/late september.
