how long do you stay asleep at a stretch - on average?

I rarely sleep for longer than 3 hours at a time without waking up before going to sleep again. On average I can sleep for 2 hours at a stretch, wake up, go to the loo, go back to sleep for 2 hours, and repeat.
And this is on 30mg mirtazapine. [Before that, my insomnia was really really bad.]
If I take a zopiclone in addition, I can max at one 4 hour stretch in a night.
So I wondered what other people's sleep patterns are like.

I've always had trouble sleeping right from when I was a newborn - from birth trauma stuff. Now, well, stress doesn't help.

How about you?

Ermmm... to be honest, my sleep's a bit screwed at the moment so I might not be the best person to ask. I used to go to bed at around 12/1/2am (this was back in Sixth Form) and wake up at 7am to go to school. I would sometimes/usually wake at around 3/4am because of dreams and suchlike but it never bothered me as I fell back to sleep straight away again.

Currently, I go to bed around 1am and wake up at 9am. This isn't a solid stretch ever, depending on whether I have abused medication that day, it is sometimes worse than others. On a better time I will get around 6/7 hours sleep but on a worse time it will be 2/3.

Though I usually can't sleep for more than 3 hours at a time due to nightmares etc.

Having said that, after a week or so with little sleep (four hours?) per night, I will have a crash out night where I will nap from 6/8pm until midnight and then wake up for an hour then sleep through until 8/9am the next morning and probably still be tired.

Perhaps I'm not the best person to ask - are you looking to get help with this?

Nope, I don't really need help with this, it's so deeply engrained I've sort of got used to it, though it is tiring..

I was just wondering how it is for others.

Sometimes I can only sleep for 20 minutes at a time.
Other times I don't wake up for anywhere between 12-15 hours.
Both are equally as bad as each other, I think.

This is if I'm sleeping on my own.
If I'm sleeping with my girlfriend, I'll generally get about two four-ish hour sleeps on a night, which is the best I've had since I was about... No, actually, ever.

I barely slept as a baby, as far as infants go, and haven't my whole life.

i sort of alternate from solid sleeps of around seven hours or if lucky more and the waking up regularly usually every 2-4 hours due to nightmares or my body just being weird. then end up falling asleep in day when i dont want to cos i'm so exhausted. (i usually crash out when i get home at 4.30 til 6pm )not by choice just happens.

i find that whenever i have slept badly i find it harder to deal with my depresson and urges. anyone else similar?

I need my sleep! I usually get at least 8-9 hours a night, sometimes more.

But I usually wake up a few times in the night and go back off. Often around 1am, 4am and 6am. Either because I am being kicked out of bed into the wall by the boyfriend, the dog needs a wee, or I have bad dreams, or get woken by a bird/sunlight outside.

I never used to be able to go back to sleep once I woke up, but I've got better at it now.

If I'm drunk/very tired I might sleep 7 hours straight. But I think most people do wake up a couple of times a night at least.

I never used to sleep more than about 15 hours a week on average, during my GCSE's I got 10 hours a week on average. NOT FUN.
Now I try to get 7/8 hours a night or else I'm pretty sh*tty to be around the next day.
I can, however, get 26 hours sleep and wake up tired.
At weekends I tend to sleep for around 10-12 hours a night.
So yeah, I used to never get any sleep and be fine but now I get loads and still need more. It sucks. I wish I just didn't have to sleep. I can pull the odd all nighter but not too often any more.

I can sleep 20 hours in a stretch and I'm always tired as I limit myself to 7-8 hours during the week. At the weekend I sleep on and off all day.

some nights I wake up every 30 minutes or so. Other nights it's every couple of hours, some nights I can sleep for 4/5 hours straight, but that's all the sleep I get. Other times my body decided to sleep solidy for 12+ hours.

All of this is on 45mg of mirtazapine, which has definitly ****ed with my sleepign pattern.

My sleep swings quite a lot.

Before I was in hospital I got around 2 hours per night thrn maybe once a week I'd sleep about 6 hours.

Now I go to sleep early (around 10-11pm) and wake at around 4-5 but I do wake during thr night at least twice. I think this is more my normal sleep pattern.

On average? I usually sleep about 3 hours without waking up and then after that I wake up about every hour until I get sick of it and get up. About every two or three months I will end up so exhausted that I kind of crash and sleep for about 14 hours. When I am more unwell though then I will basically just doze for two or three hours, waking up every 15-20 minutes.

I either don't sleep full-stop (rare) or sleep for around 12 hours or more(common). At the moment I'm having to get used to around 7 hours which is a big adjustment, but probably a healthy one. I'm lucky that, unless a bad dream is involved, I sleep right through once I fall asleep... but getting to sleep initially can be tricky.

At the moment about 6-8 hours but it has been so bad I don't get more than 3-4 lots of 30mins a night for weeks and weeks.

It varies a lot sometimes. But sleep is way way better now than it ever has been. This thread reminded me to be tremendously grateful for the sleep I get now!

Before I was on Citalopram I used to sleep around 3-6 hours a night but now they make me extremely tired, so I sleep around 8-10 hours but usually wake up quite early due to odd dreams, but I'm still able to get back to sleep quite fast.

no longer than two hours at a time, i would say, at the most. i usually wake up a lot during the night, sometimes as often as every hour or half hour. restful sleep is seriously nearly impossible.

I sleep for a good ten hours at a time when medicated; when not I wake up at like, half hourly intervals, which is no fun.
