OK, guys. Just thought I'd let you know I'll be running the Race For Life in May this year, to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Unfortunately, I never was too good at running, so was wondering if anyone had any tips on improving my stamina. Keep them clean, I know what you guys are like
whats the distance of the run? Have you done any running at all in the past? How many weeks have you got to prepare? Have you been doing any training up to date?
lol, many questions I know... I do quite a bit of running so may be able to help a little, though it's a while since I've actually entered anything running wise or had to train for soemthing
It's 5k, and I'm running on the 14th May. Haven't been doing any training beforehand, as only decided I was doing it a couple of days ago. And nope, I've always avoided running as much as possible.
14th of May should give you time. If I rfemember correctly the recomended training time for 5km with little prior running experiance is 6 weeks.
Proabably best to start off with walking, pick a route and walk it, a brisk walk if you can. Then you can start doing the whole walking for 20 mins, running for 2 mins, thing, and slowly increase the running times.
One thing to remember though is to have "rest days", you should have at least 2 rest days a week, mainly to help avoid injury.
Also as has been said, if you have to you can always walk part of the race :)
Hi,
Don't stress about it, the race for life is really fun and loads of people walk it. If you do want to run it then you have plenty of time, 5k is a good distance to train for. Like someone said you can start with walking and build in an increasing amount of running. If you prefer another type of exercise like cycling or swimming it will still all help build up you fitness and stamina but it is worth getting a bit of running in too
Have fun!
Always seem to get things just that little bit wrong.

I've done race for life a few times and its really casual, and if it takes you all day to walk it thats not a problem. I usually run what I can and push myself, but then walk the rest. Most I've managed to run was 4k.
There markers for each km so one thing I sometimes try is to run 1km, then walk one, then run the next. But I realise even that might be a little bit too far.
I know someone who did a Race For Life a couple of years ago (the ironic thing that stopped her doing it another time was that she was diagnosed with cancer. But she's fully recovered now).
She went for a morning jog before breakfast for several months prior to the race, if possible I would do start. Obviously start walking and build it up.
However if it is too late, or you dont feel fit enough for jogging on the day, then like someone said, you can walk it. On the day once you have registered and collected the stuff they give you, they organise you into 3 groups. One for the runners (which they start first), one for the joggers (which they start second) and finally the walkers (which they start last).
Dont be ashamed about walking, the main thing is that you complete it and that you make lots of money for Cancer Research. Better to walk it than try running and twist your ankle!

My Mum did it a few years ago and Race For Life sent her a training program (or she got it from their website) and it was something like, you started by running for one minute and walking for one minute x30, and you trained every other day and slowly increased the running time and decreased the walking time. She ran it (and had never run before) although found it hard work.
But well done for doing it! I think it's amazing!
