Laxatives.

Just wondering if anybody has abused them quite badly & then found a way to stop & how did your body react?
I really, well should probably stop taking them. I take way to many on a daily basis but i know that both my mind & body kind of need them now.
Im not going to see my doctor.
Any advice?

could we fix you if you broke..

Laxatives have damaged my body permanently.
I've had cameras up my bum && nurses hands... Yes, its horrible, but that's what can happen & I can't stress enough how harmful they are.

You need to see your GP if your taking a lot, as you'll need monitoring while you cut down & eventually stop.

whenthe numbers are high for me and I know it is time to reduce/stop I reduce by a certain number each time for a week. Then the following week reduce by same amount. And continue until your at a level that is safe/or stopped. I for onecan't seem to get below a certain number but it is MUCH better than the number I reduced from.

If your stauck on certain numbers (I was due to ocd) I'd do silly things like have a tic tac in place of a lax pill! It worked! I put them together with lax's and just had them randomly with the rest ( chewed the tictacs!)

Or some other small pill like mint would work.

Keep track of how you are doing and list any side effects and positive ones too.
For each time you reduce and buy less put that money in a pot. You'll be amazed over a month or 2 how much you save. I got a CD with my money :)

i'm tired of chasing my dreams.
i'm just gonna ask where they're going,
and hook up with them later.

Helen is absolutely right girl. They are so dangerous.

I've never used them heavily, so I don't really have advice...but I know it can be hard to go cold turkey..so you might have to ween yourself off them. I'd REALLY suggest you see a doctor about this, as you might have trouble going if you've damaged your colon and become dependant on them. You can try on your own...but if you notice you are unable to eliminate without them, you really might need to see your doctor to get medical attention.

Hang in there honey.

I used to use them heavily. I had to cut down slowly over several months, I saw a doctor about it and they may me reduce the numbe by so much a week in order to allow my digestive system to adjust.

Laxatives are very dangerous (as has been said) but stopping them too suddenly is also dangerous... stopping them is a balancing act of weaning the body off them and allowing it to get used to doing its job again

Laxatives basically make your bowels lazy over time and will mean your muscle tone of the colon [large intestine] is weakened. The problem comes when your muscle tone of the colon isn't strengthening quickly enough whilst comming off laxatives to make the contractions necessary to pass the digested food through you. If you have a restrictive ED you need to be eating enough food to give your faeces bulk and to provide your body with the nutrients to repair the damage caused by the laxatives too so you need to eat bulky foods with lots of fibre to help this process.

I was always told to reduce laxatives by 10% each week and if your having problems going to the toilet during this rate of reduction, try Fibogel/Ispaghula husk (make sure you drink lots with this medication, it needs water to work), also drinking fruit juices such as prune juice will add fibre naturally.

If that doesn't help, you definitely need to go to your Dr for help.
