1) There are other forms of self harming than cutting.
2) It's not just 'kids'.
I for one didn't start self harming until I was in my late 20s.

I doubt it will pass APS

Also I don't want to have a real Dx

I don't agree but I especially don't like the label "nonsuicidal self harm". You can actually be suicidal and self harm but not actually want to harm to kill yourself (if anyone can make sense of how I've worded it).

I think that regardless of the name/age weaknesses etc self harm is very definatly a mental health issue on it's own.

Whatalotofwaffle.

Mind you, I do like it they've related it to self criticism. Wow. Taken notice of how devastating it can be for people - as long as clinicians take it fully seriously.

I'm kind of uncomfortable in it being a separate diagnosis - could it not be tacked onto existing diagnosis with a code or something?

And. 5 or more days in past year? Hmm. You see, I have periods of self harming, when under a lot of stress, at intervals of several months.
I'm curious how that would figure. Looking at the criteria, it still would. Maybe I'd get the NOS. Hah. NOS all over, me!

Buuuut, they're putting it in Child and Adolescent Disorders. *bangs he.....* then again, maybe not! :P

What do us old fogies do, huh? Where do we fit in?

Does that mean it comes under the name Nonsuicidal Self Harm Not Otherwise Specified? Wow, what a mouthful.

Katie I agree with the age thing being incorrect however I Hate it being 'tacked on' to some other mental illness. I would say a fair proportion of people who self harm do NOT have another mental illness, the self harming behaviour is a disorder in it's own right. For example anorexia nervosa because it often has various emotional roots could be 'tacked on' to other things like PTSD etc but that is incorrect because it is a disorder in it's own right. As, I feel, is self harm. Plus I for one am sick to death of being given questionnaires and interviewed/treated as though I have borderline personality disorder. There is nothing wrong with having it but so far as I am aware I DON'T have it. I've been diagnosed with a few things and BPD isn't one of them and yet whenever my self harm comes up so seems to the label of 'BPD'. The two need seperating.

I guess.. I do mean where someone already has a primary diagnosis of depression or PTSD or bipolar, or psychosis, for example. Which is probably more related to us older bods. Self harm in older people I'm thinking tends to be more correlated with an existing mental health difficulty/diagnosis. In younger people it may or may not.
Don't quote me on that though, I may be wrong.

Hmm, i dont like that, not really sure what to say about it cos alot of it sounds wrong.

Hate the way they called it "cutting" and talked about people who "cut" the whole way through. Would be better to call it self harm or SI, which isnt just cutting.
I think there is a relationship with suicide sometimes, or people who SI sometimes struggle with suicide or have made suicide attempts.
Also said it was mostly kids who "grow out of it"... not really true at all, can happen for people of all ages, i know it is more common amongst teenagers though, but when it is a real problem it is very hard to get over.
Also seems to tie in with the whole "emo" stereotypes and doesnt seem like it is being taken seriously, although it did mention all the different groups it can affect, not just those depressed.

I don't like the idea of self-harm being classed as a stand-alone illness. And I certainly don't agree with it being considered solely a Childhood/Adolescence thing. True, most people do stop as they get older, but isn't that usually due to recovery from (or treatment of) the underlying illness of which the self-harm is a symptom? Implying that it's a phase you grow out of invalidates and trivialises it, in my opinion.

As for the idea that since it often comes with a variety of other mental illnesses it must be something else entirely, I don't agree with that either. Maybe it's just me, but my self-harm is very closely linked to my depression (non-existent self worth and belief that I deserve it) and eating disorder (hatred of my body and an intense desire to destroy it).

Then again, self-harm is very addictive, and there have been times when I've cut "because it's been a while since I last did it and it feels weird" so maybe that's a factor.

Not many people do. And you don't always get what you want in life now.

I dunno. I think its good that its being recognised. But something about it makes me uneasy, I don't know why.

Also, Katie, as awful as it sounds, it does make sense to put it in the classification of "Disorders usually first diagnosed in infancy, childhood or adolescence". I don't think they're trying to write off older people who still self harm, however they do have to categorize it somehow.

I disagree...self harm can vary from " picking " " breaking" "pulling " and other such forms..

just people want to label more people everytime something new pops up or has been around for years

Yeah. Just, my point is, for myself, I never started self harming until my late 20s, when the depression and other stuff really kicked in. At the time I'd not been exposed to any media influence, it just happened because I was experiencing intense emotions I didn't know how to deal with and I hated myself. I just happened to be 28 at the time.

But then, I've never been 'typical'.

I think the reason for this is to specify the conditions to a patient. Ya know, to help other doctors understand and know precautions when they prescribe physical health related drugs.

apparently there is currrently a disagreement about category with many wanting to place it undese "mood disorders" and others under "impulse-control disorder not elsewhere classified‖."

however, in reality this is just to clarify within the psychiatric and medical community... to stop people who self-harm automatically being diagnosed with bpd or been seen as suicidal. I can see the reasoning behind it, think it nneed a bit of work/editing though
