I don't like it either, it's a commercial success, people spend ridiculous amounts of money on stuff that, in most cases, will be put in a cupboard and forgotten in a week.
It's also a time of family get togethers, which always cause a problem. What with people complaining about the presents they got and don't like, arguing with each other about what to watch, and other stuff. I am pleased to be working!

It's all well and good when your a kid but you kinda lose the magic of it as you grow up. In my mind anyway.
It's so completely fake as well... Sitting around playing happy families with each other and getting wasted so you can fathom a whole day pretending to be nice to each other and not having major rows. Then theres roast dinner which is all well and good if you like it / eat meat / whatnot but if you don't your forced into eating something that makes you want to throw up and then feeling really full and horrible the whole day.
The good parts are that you can see friends (well around christmas because I'm forced to do family stuff...) and get drunk and have fun and yeh.
It's also so comercialized now a days (and yes I am aware that makes me sound really really old but still) I mean that when I was a kid it was all about santa and everything and there was this run up in the last 2 or so weeks of december that was all like 'YAY CHRISTMAS' and you'd get dragged around shops in a crazed panic by your parents buying gifts for random distant relatives whos existance you were completely oblivious of. And you'd get your tree the weekend before x-mas day and there would be nothing to do with christmas in the shops before december.
Now theres christmas stuff in shops in october. Before halloween. It should not be aloud. And theres nothing to it anymore. It's just not special because it lasts so long now.
Anyway.. I could go on but I guess this is getting really really boring so yeh...

Apart from the getting drunk bit (because I don't drink), I agree with this word for word really.
Add all that together with the fact that my parents broke up over Christmas a couple of years ago - just another reason why it's a horrible time for me.
It really kinda annoys me the way that you get stared at (as someone else said - like a leper) if you say that you don't like Christmas or even dare to suggest you might hate it.
Today in the supermarket I found another thing I hate about Christmas... they have those stupid adverts for things on special offer every 5 seconds. The people who have been in there for longer than 10 mins can already resite, word for word, the pringles advertisement!
Arrrgh and don't even get me started on the annoying Christmas music!
I hate christmas too... everything about it... my perfect christmas would be in a little cabin somewhere miles for society with not TV or anything so that I could ignore it's existence...
christmas is a fake time anyway... seeing family and acting all happy and nice to people who the rest of the year you wouldn't exchange 2 words with... sending cards to people who you haven't spoken to in however many years... buying presents half the time just as its expected or you're worried you'll look bad if they buy you one and you don't... the arguments... the rubbish christmas TV and films... The rediculas amount of food...
the biggest two issues though hare: 1) it's become a cultural holiday not religious so no avoiding it... and 2) the media plays christmas up to be some happy shiney magical time, some unobtainable perfection that can't be gained leaving people disappointed or feeling as if they've missed out on something great

The cynicism here really upsets me, actually. Not because I don't find it true, but because others don't. Christmas isn't fake for some people. To write the whole thing off as fake is really...well...inaccurate.
My family and I enjoy Christmas day without an ounce of falseness. We have traditions that we keep, we have our dinner - that accommodates all of our different food tastes, we enjoy the banter, we enjoy each other's company. And it's not just a once a year occurance - it just happens to be the one day of the year that we have the WHOLE day together. Without other commitments. It's nice. It makes it special. We don't get really drunk to waste it away, we don't spend it with relatives we hate. We don't fight any more (or any less!) than usual.
In the morning we go to the Church service and mingle with our friends, remember the reason that the day is in existence (even if personal opinion differs to that being preached). We sit around after dinner and play games, we open presents and gosh, we honestly ENJOY each other's company. It's such a special day for me.
I understand that not everybody is as lucky as me. I understand that other people have bad connotations to the holiday. I understand that some people just don't like it for whatever reason. But please, don't tell me that the whole thing is fake...because for some people it really isn't.
If you had lived my Christmas of 2006 - you would totally agree with me that it is a lie.
I'm not causing an arguement here, but you cannot possibly comment for the personal experiences of every single person on here. I think you will find if everyone was made to explain fully the reasons they feel about Christmas the way that they do, that they are totally justified for calling it fake and for considering it a waste of time.
It's nice that you have always had a good Christmas - but I haven't and neither have many other people. Let us be "cynical".. we have our reasons!
For one day of the year, I don't have to feel like an adult or worry about things; I can give presents to people I love and put up decorations and get 'merry christmas' texts from people I presumed had forgotten I existed.
I've had a pretty sh*t life. Hell, I've had a sh*t week. However, I can put aside all that and let myself be happy for one day. I don't understand why other people like wallowing in misery and are PROUD to be 'scrooges'.
If you think Christmas is too commercial, go and help out in a hospital over Christmas and see how happy the patients are to see a bit of festive cheer.

If you read the last part of my post...I said that I wasn't accounting for everyone, merely stating that no one should. Just saying 'Christmas is fake' is a sweeping, universal comment. Saying 'in my family, Christmas is fake' or 'I personally don't see the point in Christmas'...something like that to show that you're expressing a personal opinion as opposed to totally wiping it out as a holiday would be a lot nicer to those who actually enjoy it.
I never said it was wrong to feel that way, or that you shouldn't, merely that having such sweeping statements is pretty inaccurate. DO read the whole of my post before putting me 'right' about people having different experiences.
^ I'm glad your christmas is genuine missus =] I can see what you're syaing, for a lot of people it actually is about being with your family, etc, etc.
I'm actually kind of jealous =p
I'm not religious (well I am, but different religion Baha'i) so i don't celebrate christmas per-se. But I spend it with my husbands family (this will be our 3rd christmas together) and before that I always had friends inviting me round to theirs or I'd go to one of my aunties families. Christmas for me IS about getting together and spending time with family. it's the one time of the year where all of my husbands family is together (his brothers come from nsw for the holiday) and we spend the whole day together. Sure we buy each other gifts if we can afford it but one of his brothers is studying and doesn't have a job and therefore can't afford gifts so he doen't buy them. We're not worried! It's not about the presents, they just amke the day more entertaining.
I love christmas carols and the festive cheer and stuff. Sure we don't get snow and everyone gets stressed becasue it's so busy but... it's FUN!
It's not a bad thing to hate christmas but... I do hate it when people around me keep bitching at me about how horrible christmas is becasue it does make me feel bad about enjoying it. I don't get in peoples faces about loving it so why should they get in my face about hating it?
I do feel bad that people don't like this holiday. I have had... some horrible christmases. With 2 family friends dying in a massive car accident a few days before the holiday... another friend killing herself... ON the holiday... but... instead of focusing on the bad stuff, i try to make the big holidays (chirstmas, easter, new year) the few days where i try my hardest to be positive.
Yes it's been commercialised and people think its all about presents. but i don't think of it like that so it hasn't become that for me.
wooooow this turned out a little long. sorry!
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
every christmas is different last year it was a hastle and i didnt have time for it in my life .... this year im really looking forward to it i have thought carefully about the presents i have bought for my friends and family and wrapped them with love and given them with joy
christmas is just one day, this is my first christmas off in 5 years and im really excited,
love them or hate them our famlies have shaped us into who we are both through nature and nurture, its a day to put the past behind us, enjoy the present and look to the future, and be thankful for all the things we have.
I didnt mean for this to get all bitchy guys.
Im just saying.
Christmas isn't a great time for me, because my family hates me. I dont want your sympathy, its a fact. They do not like me.
Some people may thinks its fake and others dont. Your all entitled to your own opinion. I was simply asking if it was really wrong for me to hate it seeing as so many people class it so high in the years events.
when I wrote "christmas is fake" was really just a quick way of typing it... my step-dad was in the room and gets annoyed if I type too much so wasn't doing it in a brief manor...
no, for all people christmas is not fake... some people do have the nice tiem you describe or the idealist time portrayed by the media... but I am under the impression that this is a select few... and generally seems to be in familys where they are close and have "christmas like days" throughout the year...
the thing about christmas is this: why do we need a day to tell us to be "nice" and "caring" and "giving" and actually see our families? shouldn't that be the case anyway? why do we need an excuse?
I have a similar issue/thought about valentines day... why do you have to wait for a day to show someone you care? why is that excuse needed?
this isn't the reason I dislike it btw... just an observation I've made
I dislike it as I don't like the idea of socially enforced family time... I don't like the way that christmas is unavoidable, nor the way so much is expected of it... I don't like how every year for my entire life I've felt as if i'm missing out on christmas... and a few christmas's here have been pritty bad... but that's just my family being dysfunctional and none of them really getting on with one another...
For me personally.....christmas is very special. Its the one day of the year when my parents arent late home/rushing around....we spend the way together. Eat a meal together and spend the whole day enjoying each others company. Im religious,so for me thats also a big part of it and we have traditions surrounding christmas.
I completely understand that a lot of people dont have the christmas I have, I dont feel sorry for you guys, but it does make me feel a little bad sometimes, because Im lucky. So for me....christmas isnt fake, its just a day to stop and make the most of spending time with my family and enjoying the day.x
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.
