I'm not building again until next spring or summer when Windows 7 has taken the edge off with apps, software etc. I remember the Vista testers were happy but when it was released the new Nvidia DX10 video cards weren't working and the early adopters went balisitc. The new 5870 is already DX11 capable but I'll wait until the kinks come out.

I avoided i7 just because I didn't want a 130 watt CPU. The added expense and heat of new architecture would not have shown up in most apps, games etc. so I waited. The newer 32 nm shrinks are better for watts/heat so glad I waited. I do a lot of recording of TV and video - followed by encoding etc - so I like the Intel cpu's which edge out the AMD's.

I also still like the 45 nm cpu's they and the mobos and DDR2 that use them are very cheap now and still have more power than most things need.

I'm sort of in the middle of a build right now... my first :O

It got put on hold a few months ago for financial reasons but I'm resuming it now :)
You lot sound a lot smarter than I though lol. So just wondering, if I get stuck would it be ok if I attack people for advise? :P

My first build went really easy - as far as getting it to start and have the bios beep. Installing the OS was a nightmare because of a short between my floppy drive enclosure and case. It took me 3 days to figure out what he heck was up but after that everything has been downhill so it was a great experience. I'll pull the case open and fix or tinker with anything - even took a hacksaw to a new video card lol (added an accelero passive cooler). Ask away on any questions. I ma sure a lot fo people here build. I also like these two forums

Check Newegg for "openbox" specials and discounts. You can find parts cheap and buy one at a time over time.

Also -a good thing I learned was to that a brand name computer missing operating system disks can still have OS installed if original OS license is still on the case of PC somewhere. Say a computer came with Windows XP Home edition but disks are lost. Just borrow someone's XP Home disk if you don't have one and install OS. When its time to put in license # just use the one on the case. Bingo - all will be well.

Ebay is full of computers that are like 50 - $100 because the owner has no OS and figures the PC is dead. For $100 you can buy it and get a case, power supply etc. Right now another $200 added could get you a new mobo and a Core 2 Duo 2.93 ghz cpu (which people are overclocking above 4.0 ghz).

Once you build you can just add parts as needed/wanted and dont have to build all at once. My first build was in 2006 but I put in new mobo and video card with Vista (Ulitimate version - $95 on ebay) last year.

Oh I almost forgot before - USB 3.0 out is coming out at any time (in fact Asus had one put pulled it last months). I wouldn't put a lot of money into an expensive mobo since USB 2.0 about to become a legacy item.

Looks pretty good. I almost bought that case once. It's been real cheap lately. I'm not an AMD person and don't care for Nvidia mobo chips but that mobo has good reviews. Games don't utilize a cpu over 3.0 ghz so the cpu is nice.

I never uses Scythe Kama Angle but I use a Scythe Ninja B and really like it (I can turn fan off and it still keeps heat low).

The power supply is bigger than you need but if the price was right its a good psu. I use Seasonics since they build the PSU's for Corsair (who charge more than Seasonic). I psu is generally most efficient in its higher ranges so if a computer uses 300 watts but has a 650 watt psu then the sweet spot isn't centered but with a good brand of PSU that will be less important. A 500 watt is fine for most computers (especially with a single video card).

I have a HD 4850 and really like that. However when it was new I was running temps of 80C at idle. This was considered normal. When I set the fan speeds higher the card got only slightly cooler but much noisier. So I installed a passive cooler called Accelero S1 Rev 2. It was cheap and easy to install (there are tutorials on YouTube) and lots of people use the cooler.

My temps went down to 45 to 50 C depending on the weather. There is no noise because there is no fan. A fan can be added very cheaply if desired. I would highly recommend the Accelero but I would want to check how it would work with your mobo since the SATA connectors might be in the way. The Accelero can be configured to go above or below (the usual way) the 4850 and is just a bit shorter than the card itself
