I do agree with this, but its tricky.. once a member has created a thread, theres no way to delete just their posts without deleting an entire thread, and if someone asks for their account to be deleted or their posts to be due to potential confidentiality things, we cant really say no.
This is why all members have the ability to delete any post they have made or any thread they have created.
Could perhaps a mod/CT take over the 'general' threads? By either starting a new one or editing the OP out of the thread?

I'm not a computery person so if this is nonsense ignore me lol. But is there not a way of sort replacing the original post so that when the persons posts are deleated the thread remains?

But if a thread has been going for years you cant expect someone to go through two years of posts to deleter theirs all individually as thats the only other way apart from deleting a thread.

Just for the record, this thread hasn't upset me at all. And I agree with Jodie when she said it wasn't a polite thing for me to do! I did act rather rashly last week and have spent the last week and a half seriously regretting not consulting those in the thread first.
Also, I understand why it has upset people as it seemed to all be done behind the scenes. (I'm sure this is something I have now said a few times)
And I also think that maybe it wasn't wise for the conversation to happen behind the scenes so that other people who weren't on the CT to see it. As I imagine it was annoying to be left in the dark.
I also think the suggestion if the OP of a popular thread asks for it to be closed, it might be an idea to give a day's warning/give a cooling off period to ensure this is the way to deal with any issues.
But I also think that maybe it might be worth accepting that mistakes have been made by all and that we should all maybe try to move on from it because it seems to me that we are going round in circles again.

unfortunately not.
It would be super handy though huh.
Maybe we'll ask for something like it for V4.. *chortle*
what I meant was is there not a way of sort of altering the first post so that the system no longer sees it as being their post, and then all their posts can be deleated in the normal way but that one will not be as it won't be recognised by the system as their post.
I may not be explaining this well... or it could just not be possible to do I'm not sure lol

Is there no way to just delete the content of their post though?
Whilst we could edit the content of the post some members want their username deleted, from the boards and to do that and as Charlie says their is no way for the first poster of a thread to do that without deleting the whole thread.

I dont think that would work either cos when you merge two threads, they get put together in date order so the very first post from either thread would still be the first post. Dont quote me on it though.
Is It possible to make a thread with a similar title and merge them with the. Mod as the threaded starter?
On a big thread it would literally take weeks.
I know not everyone can see it but the thread that I merged etc in CT land consisted of probably 10 posts that I wanted to keep 30 that I needed to delete and that took me about 30 - 40 solid minutes.

Also the only times this would really be relevant would be when a thread was to be deleted due to the poster wanting to leave RYL if that happened then I think discussion would be needed at that point.

So if we were to round up this thread so to speak, would it be a good idea to perhaps have a wish list of ideal things which could be made into more usable ideas?
Just thinking a lot has been said and its all a muddle.... I will start a list:
Wishlist
* For all multi-user support threads to have a warning period of 24hrs before closing OR for them to be 'owned' by the community.
* For better communication when situations such as this occur, ie not kept in mod-land/CT, at least an acknowledgement for PMs
* For at least one post to be made in the thread if something (ie spamming) is becoming a problem.....
Feel free to edit, add your own etc....

Reason: Its late, brains fried, made a mistake.
Just for the record this wasnt even discussed in modland, it was in the CT boards.
There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.

if a member requests their thread be deleted or closed, it will be done. If the reasons for this thread had been that Katy needed her account deleting for confidentiality reason or whatever then there would have been another thread made by a mod to carry it on.

Agree regarding the pm.. apologies again. however, this thread was not kept in mod land. it was closed upon request and then the discussion was taken straight to the community team
* For at least one post to be made in the thread if something (ie spamming) is becoming a problem.....
Also agree, however, as Cam mentioned before, this thread had never been flagged to the moderators as being spam laden or having had any issues what so ever, hence a 'please dont spam' post not being made by ourselves. It was literally closed at request, as is our policy to do.

This list is not just for mods though I was thinking that perhaps if Katy felt it was all spammy or anyone else then they could post a warning?!
'unless a thread/post is rule breaking or an entire account is being removed, the moderators will not remove posts upon request as all members have the ability to do this themselves'
then members can take responsibility for themselves.
