I understand its your point, but what Im saying is that yes I think it is fair that someone has the right to have their own thread closed regardless of whether other people use it for support.
Surely its unfair to deny someone the right to choose whether their thread is closed or not?As the creator of it it should be their choice, in my opinion.
I agree with this.

I understand your point and I think the others have as well. But I disagree that a thread becomes owned by the public, as such, just because it's popular. I think that this would be impossible to use in practice and would only lead to arguments and drama over what happens when threads like this have issues and want to be closed etc. I really think that the creator of the thread has to retain the ownership of it - this means it's always clear to everyone.

Its like noone is listening to the fact that a lot of people were hurt and upset by this. And on a site which is meant for support this angers me.
... its a thread on the internet. If you had university worries there was nothing to stop you from making your own support thread about such issues.
Its not like every avenue of support was suddenly cut off for individuals so im not really sure why there may have been so much 'hurt and upset'.
At the end of the day, the original poster of the thread could at any time delete the thread themselves, every member is entitled to do as they wish with their threads, or indeed ask for them to be taken from the main board or closed should they need to.
This thread was closed for more than the reason of the OP choosing to leave the site or whatever and it was made clear that it was under discussion.
On a side note.. i do not think that this thread is at all fair to the maker of the uni students thread.
Yeah....pretty sure the OP is going to be the one who is 'sad and hurt' when they see this.x

I think for me the main issue is that I felt there was a problem that we weren't told about. This may be difficult for you to imagine but it's very stressful to be on the other side of a situation where you have no idea what is being said about you or something you've taken part in. I don't blame the OP for wanting to close the thread, and I can understand why she may have felt it had gone off track, I just wish someone had said "Hey guys, would you please take it easy on the spam? It's getting a bit overwhelming", rather than this escalating into some kind of all-important secret discussion.

But Mike that has nothing to do with the mods surely?
I assume your comments refer to the thread in CT land which was solely posted on by RYLers connected to the thread.
I also think it's important to point out that a comment was made by a member of the CT which led to others agreeing Katy then asked for the thread to be locked and at that point there was a mixture of posts. Some members were upset at the thread being closed but I would say there was an equal number if not slightly more members who were having real issues with the spam content of the thread and these were both existing members and member who had tried posting for support but to their minds had been ignored. This seemed to be the case on the thread in CT land and amongst the PM's recieved.

Right i'm just popping on to say the reason I asked for it to be closed was to stop the level of spam as I personally was aware of people posting for support and it being ignored. The thread was loosing its purpose and I was concerned that it could end upbeing reported/
closed forever, which I knew would cause a lot more distress than a temporary closure.
I also understand why so many people have been upset and angry about the closure of the thread due to how abrupt it was and with no warning, in hindsight I went about things the wrong way.
At the end of the day it is a support thread first and there are those who would like to post uni issues in there and felt unable to due to everyone (myself included) talking nonsense.
Well to be fair I think thE OP should have said they were concerned In the thread and given the posters the chance to think and report back with their suggestions before randomly PMing mods...
Katy, I understand what you're saying, and I can really see why you chose to do what you did. I'm sorry if this thread upset you, I think the main problem is lack of communication... on all sides.

I dont think its fair to be discussing how the OP should of handled the situation. Its their right to choose what they do with the thread and it was the right protocol to follow katy so I dont think you handled it badly at all.

But that's like organising an event with lots of people then cancelling at the last moment with no explanation. It's not socially correct. You voice your concerns with the people involved and give it a chance to make changes. If it doesn't, then get other outside peopl involved.
On a side note, I was thinking earlier when i was having a look on the life feed 'oh, the closing of the uni student thread for that one week seems to have done some good, all the posts that are showing up are mostly to do with uni related stuff now'.
I really do not forsee this being a productive discussion... I am a bit worried that all that's going to happen is people are going to get upset and frustrated... Might be best for us all to learn from this, maybe in future there be more notice about things that could be taken as an upheaval to others, and for us all to just try to move on. I may be being overly paranoid but I am worried that someone is going to get hurt or that the whole thing is going to blow up out of all proportion and people will end up leaving or something
Just to make it clear, that I am NOT making a dig of any kind at the OP of the thread and she knows that as we are friends and have discussed this as I communicate openly.
I think that perhaps the discussion could have taken place without/before the thread was closed- as have similar issues in the thread in the past.
I know for example that many members of the thread felt that they were being blamed and that it was their fault- personally for me I am more annoyed on behalf of my friends, some of which do not feel safe posting elsewhere and in the thread people can be supported in a more relaxed, less intense way.
The lack of communication has been a major issue. It can't take much for a PM to be sent to regular members saying less spam, more SRS BSNS.... or maybe I am wrong....

But if its your event then its your right to cancel it.
Thats like...if you were having a birthday party and then decided you didnt want it at the last minute you wouldnt tell everyone that you want to cancel it but if everyone voices their concerns/opinions then you would consider carrying on with the party, you would just cancel it.
