Have a fun-filled and festive holiday season. Stay safe and positive during this stressful time. If you haven't already, try going into chat and see what its all about; we are open for other general chat and support.
Kismet.(Popple): I'm relatively new to the chat mod team, but I just wanted to say that I hope you all have a lovely Christmas. I know some members find this time of year hard, but I hope that it goes as smoothly as it can do for everyone. And remember that RYL is always here for support =) ! Here's to 2011

Tutti Frutti(Tutti Frutti): Snow is falling all around me, children playing having fun. It's the season for love and understanding, merry Christmas everyone. ;)
griddlebone(Liv): Hello RYL,
I hope you all have a Merry and safe Holiday season,however you are spending it. Lets hope that 2011 brings plenty of good times for everyone. Please remember that RYL is here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year....Have a lovely Christmas :)
The First Aid Team would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday!
Due to the holiday season there may be a decrease in replies within the First Aid Forum. Users may still post but please be aware that, if in doubt, it is always safest to seek medical help rather than waiting for a reply from a First Aid Advisor (or Wound Care Advisor if regarding a wound).
It is also a good idea to make sure all your first aid kits are fully stocked for the holiday season, as store opening times may be limited and we would hate for someone to be stuck.
A basic first aid kit should include the following items;
*Sterile Non-stick (may be written as "non-adherant"/ "low-adherent") gauze
*Anti-bacterial cream
*ACE wrap/ Tubi-Grip
*Bandages
*Bandaids/ Plasters
*Medical tape Steri-strips may also be beneficial
The First Aid Team would like to wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.

Bleeding
You should apply firm pressure using a non-stick gauze, directly to the wound as soon as you can. Do not lift the gauze off until 10-15 minutes has passed. If the wound bleeds through it put another one on top and continue to press down.
If after 10-15 minutes, the bleeding has not stopped (a small amount of spotting/ the wound refilling up to it's edges are ok) then you are unlikely to be able to treat the wound at home an so you should seek medical help immediately.
Dressing a wound
Before dressing or tending to ANY wound it is important that your hands are washed really well and then left to dry. This should be done with an antiseptic soap and warm water, rubbing the hands quit a bit and in different directions to try and ensure EVERY surface has been covered. You can also use an alcohol gel (though make sure ALL of this has dried into your skin thoughly before tending to the wounds) which is better done after washing your hands. You can alternatively (or preferably alongside washing your hands), put on a pair or vinyl/ latex gloves when dealing with your wounds. These are VERY important steps in reducing the risk of infection.
To dress a wound, you should apply a thick layer of antibacterial cream to a non-stick gauze. Place this over the wound and use a bandage such as tubi grip (these should not be worn at night)/ACE wrap to hold it all in place. Change the dressing regularly applying more cream each time. Often holding a dressing in place with medical tape is more better than a bandage and buying Adhesive Dressings can also make it much easier.
Infection
If you have any signs of an infection in a wound, then it is likely to need treatment from a medical professional. Antibiotics may need to be prescribed.
The common signs of an infection in a wound are as follows;
*Heat/ reddening around the wound
*Green discharge
*Smell
*Inflammation around the wound
*Some people may also show the symptoms of a cold and/or a fever.
NB: You must seek medical attention if you exhibit these.

There have been many changes and achievements within the support team over the past year. We have recruited nine new supporters and have trained some more supporters to be able to support on Live Help. We have also seen some new Team Leaders within the various secret boards we have as supporters!
As well as this, our supporters have had many personal achievements. These include passing driving tests, moving to London, volunteering, passing exams, going to uni, and even trying cliff jumping.
We would like to wish you a merry Christmas and hope that 2011 is a great year for you. Please remember that the support team are here for you throughout the Christmas and New Year period and can be contacted through Live Help or email at support@recoveryourlife.com. If you need urgent support and Live Help is not online you can always contact the Samaritans or a helpline which is local to you.

The CT has been doing a lot of work this year with the help from all of you we looked into and changed the trigger labels on all the support boards to contains rather than trigger so thank you to all of you who gave us your input. We have been working through and approving the member Biographies that are on the main site, as well as looking the stickies in the boards and how to make it so there are less but at the same time the high level of information is still with there for you all.
