How old are you?22
Are you male or female?
Female
What is the reason you started self harming?
To be honest I do not remember... I remember that the first time I did it was at the age of 6 while my parents were having an argument. I think it was a combination of trying to gain control and a form of punishment
Does self harm help you feel in control of your life?
Sometimes... but it’s more about punishment to us, and retaining a connection with the world (dissociation issues) it regains connection with the body, and also stops flashbacks...
Does anyone know that you self harm?
A few of my friends know, and my partner does. Others probably know too be we haven’t discussed it
If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out?
I told my partner (I told him before we moved in together as with living together he would find out and it’s best for me to explain than one day him find out) and 2 friends, the others noticed scars and asked directly... I can ever really lie when asked directly, so I admitted it. A few doctors and psychs know about it too, but I'm seeing them for other reasons really so it's not a focus or anything
What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone?
I don’t see why I should hide it... I mean I don’t run around going “look at me, look at my scars, etc” but they are part of us, part of our life and part of the body. And I feel that taboo and stigma are REALLY damaging and we hope that in showing that we am not ashamed we can help (in some small way) to remove the taboo a little, and once the taboo is gone and people are able to discuss self-harm then we can work on the stigma issue
