so... I've been having some money troubles and so have done a load of balance sheets and budgeting things and stuff...
and I'm shocked...
you know when people give up smoking and realise how much money it saves them? well SI seems to be similar... the amount of money I spend on first aid supplies... and on transport to A&E (work in local hospital so generally go to one a bit further away if SI related)... not to mention the cost of tools...
it's scary...
on top of that SI has gotten me suspended from work...
just thought I'd inform people as only just realised this and it's almost becoming a new insentive to carry on trying to stop... though would share as others probably haven't realsied this as I hadn;t...
Yup. I've spent so much money on buying more long sleeved tops and hoodies, and on makeup and first aid stuff, it's awful. Thankfully A&E is walking distance away though, but still, it's a lot of money when it all adds up.
wow.
thats made me think.
all of the clothing, the dressings, bandages.. the tools.
I havent thought of this before. I have *wasted* tons of money!

Hmm, it doesn't cost me much. I'm what you could call a dirty self harmer. Never use first aid, buy a pack of 'Tools' and it lasts me quite a while. I re-use blades often.
I don't care if anyone sees the blood on sheets/clothes, everyone knows I self harm in my house.. And the purchases of long sleeved clothing hasn't been much at all. I was due more clothes anyways, I just bought long sleeved instead of short.
I can see how some peoples mount up though. First aid supplies seem expensive as hell!
On a long enough time line, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.
First aid stuff costs me a fortune although my Nurse Practitioner has started writing me prescriptions for bandages which is very helpful! A+E trips cost a fortune though, with parking and petrol it's is usually between 12 and 24 pounds a week on top of the first aid stuff and the tools and the replacement bed sheets etc.
I've spent loads on self harm because I used to buy things in bulk and shop around for more unusual "tools". When I decided to stop I gave all my sharps to my GP and there was a carrier bag full it was quite embarassing.
And then dressings, antispetics, steristrips, prescription charges for antibiotics when I got infected. Long sleeved tops. Oh and a tin of paint to repaint a wall in my old house that had got bloodstained.
I reckon I've spent more in my lifetime on SI than I have on going to the cinema or something.

Yup, way too expensive, and it's only recently that I've bothered with the whole first aid thing.

I'm slightly ashamed to say it, but I nicked most of my tools from areas in my house. We have a first aid kit, and I could pass off taking supplies out of it because I'm a total klutz and always carry band-aids and peroxide/alcohol wipes in my purse, as well as keeping gauze and tape in my room. When I did buy tools, it was really cheap (can't say what it was due to tip sharing) but yeah...my addiction was cheap to sustain. What was expensive to me was the impact it had on my friends.
I don't think I've spent money on anything except one or two bottles of bio-oil. I was given my tool as a present when I was about 8, and I just clean it with a tiny bit of antiseptic spray I keep for my hands anyway. Haven't needed any first aid stuff yet.
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell. I know, right now you can't tell. But stay a while and maybe then you'll see A different side of me Unwell - Matchbox 20
"Why inflict pain on oneself, when so many others are ready to save us the trouble?"
George Pacaud (1879 - 1937)
I've been told I can get first aid supplies for free from the health center at school, as well as taking them from the bathroom at school, but I still end up spending a lot of money on first aid supplies as I'm never willing to use any by my own for fear of having to explain to people what it's for (the people at the health center know, but even if I went there, I'd still worry about seeing other students I know there as they're not exactly great about privacy). I haven't ever really kept track of it, and I buy a lot of it online, and my parents pay for it then, but I'm pretty sure that even just what I buy in stores when I can't find something online or need it sooner is still my third biggest expense each month, after food and meds (the copays for my meds add up to $40-50 per month)...
And that's even without having to buy clothes because of it anymore simply because it's been about 5 years now, so my wardrobe is pretty solidly long-sleeved at this point... I've also not had to replace any sheets as I'm kind of compulsive about covering things enough to be sure I won't bleed on anything, but I don't even want to think about how much that would cost... I also don't buy new tools very often, and when I do, what I buy are really cheap (I probably spend about $5 every 2-3 months on tools), so really it's just first aid supplies, but even just that adds up...

tools are generally cheap to me. and i never really do first aid. but i could see how it could get that way. and if that's a motivating factor to stop, then that's definitely a good thing to think about.
