The grand finale to what has been a really terrible work week, some random guy broke into the break room at my work and stole my wallet out of my purse. He didn't touch anyone else's stuff, that was also sitting there in plain sight, just mine! I am so beyond pissed right now. All the money I have was in there (which was only about $30, and another un-cashed check for $55 dollars, but still...)
I called the police already. All they said was, "Oh. Well if you ever see the guy again, give us a call."
What the hell kind of response is that!? We have video evidence and two witnesses, and they're not even going to look into it?
I did a little bit of my own detective work, and tracked my debit card to a gas station, where the theif tried to fill up his tank with it. Joke's on him, because I have -$9.32 on there, so he didn't get anything. But the owner of the gas station won't let me see the surveillence tapes or the records, so now I'm stuck again. I called the police back to tell them that they probably had him on video YET AGAIN at the gas station, and they were like, "Ok. We'll add it to the report."
So basically, everyone is being really unhelpful and I am stuck with no money, no ID, nothing.
Anyone else ever been in this situation? Do you think there's anymore things I can do to track this guy down? And if I did, approximately how much trouble do you think I'd be in if I skipped calling the cops again and just kicked his teeth in instead?
i've had my wallet nicked before. you need to cancel all your cards and such which i'm sure you know. i'm sorry the police aren't taking it very seriously. jsut thought i'd say i know how you feel and if you do track this guy down please don't do anything rash
take care
Yeah, I cancelled my card this morning, and I called my boss to see if he can cancel the check that was in my wallet, so the dude can't go cash it somewhere.
I really hope I do find him though. Probably wouldn't really kick his teeth in, cause he's like twice my size, but it is nice to think about, haha.
You'd be in a lot more trouble than the thief. Basically, cops are unhelpful unless it is over $500 stolen or in damages, and clearly that is not the case. They don't even actively look for stolen vehicles. If they happen to come across one abandoned, you're ****ed, you're paying for everything (the two, the time in impound, everything).
I honestly do not think there is anything you can do aside from cancel everything. You could also see about stopping the check from being cashed (unless he tries to cash it himself, that might be fraud and he could get in trouble for that), and see if they can reissue the check to you. That takes time, though.
I'm sorry that they're being so unhelpful. They really just consider it petty theft as long as it's under a certain amount and don't bother pressing charges or anything really.
*hugs* I know the law in aus is that if it's in self defence and you're using equal to lesser force than the attacker then they can't charge you. The problem is getting him to attack you, and then you kicking his arse without using a weapon that he isn't. So best to avoid that track.
Cancel your bank cards and get new cards sent, and ID, medicare all that stuff sent to you again, explaining that it was stolen. It's a right nuiscence but it happens a lot so the people are used to it and helpful.
Cops are useless, I wouldn't even bother. I don't think I've ever reported my solen wallets to them (happened two or three times to me) cause I know they don't care. If anything they get annoyed at you cause it means more paperwork for them.
*hugs* it's relatively easy to get back on your feet though, it's just annoying and take time
Thanks everyone. I tried to go get a new driver's license, but since I had my license suspended for a month a few years back, they have a total of $100 in fees I have to pay to renew it. Obviously I can't do that, since I just got all my money stolen. Arrgh!
But I did find my passport, so I have at least something now. Still have to get my debit card completely stopped (I already requested it, but for some reason they said it takes a few days). And I have to report my social security card missing (yes, I know you're not supposed to have it in your wallet, but it's a card, where else are you supposed to keep it?). And my boss from my other job got my stolen check voided, and says she'll give me a new one when I come in Saturday. woo hoo!
So I just have to be completely penniless until friday and then things will be fine again.
