My friend is called Tripod because it only has three legs. Other names for it include Warg (for those that get the lord of the rings connection), Satan, Spawn of all that's evil...
but in terms of good dogs names, Toby is good too. Or Karpovski. Or Dog.

I'm now imagining a jack russel type build with a '**** you' attitude that jack russells tend to have but the big fluffy white hair sort of thing

If it's cute and cuddly you've got to call it devil or something along those lines... actually one of the funniest names i'v come across was 'Uck You' we were like I bet that isn't what it actually get's called.
Go with your instincts. I basically look at a dog and have names come to my mind and that is what you want but don't call it anything you'd be embarrassed to shout across a field or anything a vet would be embarrassed shouting and not one with an unusual spelling coz they can be a nightmare when searching their names on a vets database (actually do it so long as you don't live anywhere where I may do work exp/ work!!!)! We've had some before which we didn't want to shout so we just shouted their surname and hoped for the best!

where i stay there is a lot of embarrassing names for dogs and cat's, sometimes the look of it and what it is like gives you an idea on what to call it.

Cujo, even more amusing when given to a smaller dog. Heh, I call most dog's cujo if I dont know their names. Big dog names are amusing when given to smaller dogs, like Brutis and Hercules. When ya call the name everyone is braced to see a huge dog come running and when a little one comes a runnin it lightens the mood.
Dillan is a cool name for a dog.
Not sure if thisll help but pet names can relate in how you found or came across/adepoted them. Found my pup after I hiked a mile and a half back into a national forrest and he just appeared at my campsite and adopted me heh, so I named him after the mountain I was on, Clinch.

God i hated that Stephen King book. I cant stand the way he writes.
I hope you find a really great name for him and im sure he will be ace and give you tonnes of love!
Im sure if you get another chance to see him or once you are around him a little more his personality will kinda pick a name for itself.
Seeing as hes part Jack Russel and they are known for their tenacity and Jack Black is in Tenacious D you could call him Jack Dee :P
Ahem. sorry. really not helping are we.
Personally i love the name Colin for a dog. Dance for me colin, dance dance *chuckles to self*
