Good gift ideas for vegan friend?

Okay, so one of the girls my partner works with is absolutely lovely and the three of us have become firm friends. It's her birthday in about a week and I really want to give her something nice - but I have no idea what to give a vegan. If I'm short on $$ when I need to give someone a gift I usually just bake them something, but I am not vegan, and haven't ever really experimented with vegan baking (the friend in question has promised to teach me!). That, and I am a little hazy as to what is vegan and what isn't - she's also very environmental and so I want to kind of reflect that as much as I can. But I am so stumped! I can sew, and have done stamping and scrapbooking and a whole lot of other crafting in my life, I don't know how I am so confused!

So does anyone have any experience with giving vegan gifts? I am thinking I might sew her something awesome to put stationary etc in (she's 15 and still in school), or I could make a notebook and print out awesome vegan recipes off the internet...gah - I am having a combination of too many ideas and not enough!

Vegan baking is easy. In general, milk is replaced with soy milk, butter and egg is replaced with oil. I've found them much more reliable than dairy recipes, stay fresh longer and taste just as good!

I made these for a friends wedding as the vegan option. Ignore the icing recipe, vegan cream cheese isn't widely available and standard icing is vegan.

You know what I bet she'd love? If you pledged to try going vegan for a month ;)

The others have made great suggestions. vegweb.com has lots of AMAZING recipes, and so many are simple to make. Chocolate covered katie has a great blog (google her) with amazing, healthy, vegan desserts. Her fudge daddy brownies are eye-wateringly good.

Another idea might be to sponsor an animal in her name, which wouldn't need to be too expensive. Buy her a vegan cookbook (anything by Isa Chandra Moskowitz is usually well-received).

Maybe you could craft her a vegan/eco slogan that she could put on her backpack or something? A gift voucher for a local health food/natural store?

Good luck! :)

Just a note, if you do choose to sponsor an animal for her, make sure it's wild and not in a zoo. Vegans tend not to agree with keeping wild animals in captivity.

Thanks for the ideas everyone - I am thinking of going with a little bit of everything and putting together a vegan gift basket for her with lots of little bits and pieces that I can make up.
