therapy?

So today I almost cut. Why? Because my mom found out what my brother did to me, and now I'm being sent to therapy. I'm actually kind of happy, in a way. Now I'll finally have someone to talk to. But I was wondering what therapy is like. How was your first time in therapy? Did you want to go or were you forced to go? How was your therapist? I was also wondering if therapists tell your parents what you tell them. Can they tell my mom that I cut?

well the first time i went to therapy was after a stay in the hospital. It was weird he made me talk about stuff i didnt want to and took alot of notes. But eventually I told him I cut he never told my mom he said he couldn't as long as i tell him after the fact its already done. Hope that helps. :)

thanks! it did help :) i'm actually glad that you said that they asked questions, because I don't want it to be like, me akwardly sitting with the therapist and them waiting for me to talk....

It does depend on the therapist- some do sit and wait for you to talk, but I *think* the more recent training avoids this. The first appointment is more likely to be an assessment, so they'll ask you things like why you're there, your past, family, friends etc., just anything that will help them to understand how to help you.

Therapy is very challenging, but if you stick with it it can really help. Hope it helps :)

I was forced, but I wanted to go- if that makes sense, like my mum found out and said I had to go- but I also kind of wanted to go.
I think Gemma is right, for me at least the first appointment was mostly background stuff so they can understand you a bit. Therapy was pretty helpful for me.
Hope it goes well, take care xx

My first time in therapy was a long time ago, so I don't really remember it. But more recently I've found that - while I'm always nervous beforehand, every time I go into therapy I end up coming out stronger and more recovered. Some will wait for you to talk, my last one simply sat there and said "so, why don't you start at the beginning" and before i knew it I was spilling everything. It really does make a difference having someone to talk to that is never going to judge you.

As for telling parents things, my experience has been that they can't *unless* they feel you are in actual danger of dying. Patient/client confidentiality, and even if they did have to pass information on, they have to tell you they're doing so first and tell you why they feel it necessary. They can't go behind your back.

Therapists are like jackets, you have to have one that's a good fit or it's not going to help you. Don't be afraid to say "hey this person isn't working for me, can we find someone else?"

*hugs* and good luck

I had a therapist once, I repressed a lot of that time tho, so I can't really say anything to help you. But I hope all goes well. =)

My first time was scary because I had no idea what to expect. I was semi-forced to go after my mum found out about my cutting, I was unsure but relieved at the same time. The first session involved getting an overview of everything including family background, my background etc.

My therapist is wonderful. I see her twice a week atm and she's lovely. I'm a shy, awkward person but it's all fine. If you're not happy with who you get though, I'm sure you can try and change it. I'm not sure how much age affects things but I'm 17 & my therapist always checks what I want my parents to know. I tell my therapist loads of things that absolutely nobody else knows and she keeps her word.

So basically, I'm sure it'll be fine and you'll find it a big help. Just give it a chance and best of luck :)
