Are you Addicted to your Doctor?

I'm currently watching the C4 programme about the NHS front line. Seems like classic Channel 4 to me. A woman who has anxiety attacks has called the ambulance twenty times in the past year but it's unacceptable according to the programme.

Anyone else watch it? Thoughts?

For you to be here now trillions of drifting atoms had somehow to assemble in an intricate and intriguingly obliging manner to create you. It's an arrangement so specialized and particular that it has never been tried before and will only exist this once. That is of course the miracle of life.

I've just flicked it over. Current gentleman seems to be very unusual!

Channel4 does tend to dramatise things; it's why it's popular. They'll always be TV as long as there's quirky people.

In some A&Es 9 in 10 patients are leaving with no treatment, only advice. That's rather shocking isn't it.

I bet the woman with the anxiety attacks hasn't been offered any specialist help to stop the anxiety attacks.....

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

I saw that, it did seem pretty typical of C4. I remember thinking "Are they saying it's unacceptable because they think anxiety attacks aren't really an issue? Would they say it's unacceptable to call an ambulance 20 times a year for really bad seizures? .....yeah, probably."

Yeah I've had the same thing with seizures if I am out. They just don't get it do they? I've also been told not to have a seizure on stairs or in roads, because it could be dangerous! Because obviously I get to chose when I have a seizure don't i? best one for me was being taken by an ambulance that had seen me have a seizure and had taken me straight from where they found me and someone in A&E had a go about me wasting an ambulance, as if the ambulance crew would know not to take me. A&E got a lecture from the ambulance crew and were told to apologise to me as I was not responsible for their actions.

I don't bother getting myself there except under exceptional circumstances. I hate going to A&E.

With the advice thing that could be read in different ways. When I was admitted as a mental health emergency in England I was refused any treatment or care and was sent home with advice because I didn't live there (I live in the UK but not England) it was a nightmare. I've also been admitted to a hospital too late to be seen by a consultant for a physical problem and been sent away and told to come back at 9am the next day and self care until then as that was when there are consultants around to ask.

I know people do go unnecessarily (I was in A&E when someone came in with a sore throat wanting strepsils once!!) but also there may be other things impacting on figures like people 'just' leaving with advice.

Wow, I'm shocked to hear how badly you guys have been treated about your epilepsy. My mother suffers from it and has been to A&E a good few times with it and has been treated pretty well every time tbh. She doesn't go out alone though so whoever's with her knows about her situation and that she doesn't need an ambulance/medical attention of any sort usually, so I guess that's the difference there between her situation and the ones you describe. She should be allowed to go out alone, I'm just overprotective and she's too anxious about it which usually induces seizures:P

Her psychotic episodes, however, are a different story entirely.

I guess also it depends on how many and what can be done. In my case I have two conflicting conditions that a issue seizures. One is epilepsy related the other is neurological but not epilepsy, hard to explain, sorry.

I know nothing can be done to treat me if I go to A&E so I don't, if I have a choice! There is a general consensus where I live that if you are known to have seizures or related issues you must not go every time but only in specific circumstances. Possibly it is related to their being no neurologist and the generalists not having enough knowledge? I have a card which details when I must go, I don't always do that I admit as I am terrified of A&E.

I have had positive experiences as well as negative, but when I replied I concentrated on those. I can't remember why.
