Things not to say to someone with a mh problem

Inspired by the thread in sh discussion about things that people have said that we have found unhelpful regarding our SI I thought we would have a similar thread regarding our mh. I will start first.

On Sunday we had a police presence in my village. They were after someone and the police helicopter was flying over my flat. My dad was like "maybe they are after you". Thanks dad for feeding into my paranoia and making me even more paranoid than I was already.

"Just ignore the voices". Said by my mum in the past. First of all it's not that easy as anyone here who hears voices knows how loud they can be. Secondly if I was able to ignore the voices I wouldn't need medication. I have been on antipsychotics since 2004.

which I guess is true, but when you are at the lowest of the low all you can think about is either dying or just trying to survive just one more minute of one more day.. change is the last thing on your mind.

‘There are worse people off than you.” While this is strictly true, that doesn’t mean my feelings and opinions are invalid just because I have things some people don’t. It really annoys me this one.

"What do you think would help you?" (when you're in a severe crisis and want them and are calling for help) .

"That isn't a reason for cutting." (nurse saying this about my self harm urges in hospital. I told her it was because of depression.)

"Lots of people have a worse life than you and they don't cut!" (first psychiatrist at 18)

It's the generalisations that people say to me about my urges like "use ice" and "a rubber band." I don't cut for pain so what use would that be?

"You walked all the way here to tell me you want to kill yourself?!" (another nurse at the Crisis Team).
