Please Sign Petition For FREE Calls To Samaritans

Samaritans receive more than five million calls for help in the UK and Republic of Ireland each year. When a person is struggling to cope, they need to know that someone will be there to help them when they need it most, without having to worry about the cost of the call.

Research shows that call costs are a barrier to some people using our service, particularly those from lower income groups, who are more reliant on mobile phones and expensive pay-as-you-go tariffs. Suicide rates are often highest in socio-economically deprived communities, so this means that some people who really need our service cannot afford to access it.

We are working with major telecoms companies to find ways of making our service more affordable so that we can offer free calls to everyone. What we need now is a commitment from the next government to help us make our number free across the UK.

Please sign this petition so that anyone who is struggling to cope can afford to call us and we'll send the signatures to the new Minister of State at the Department of Health.

I actually know of someone who racked up a huge bill (triple figures) over the course of a month to Samaritans. It didn't really help matters when they were already quite dire.

It is a shame, and it isn't Samaritan's fault - they'll ring you back if you ask and they have landline numbers too - but it seems such a shame that the phone companies are charging for this service.

It doesn't matter where you come from; it matters where you go.
No-one gets remembered for the things they didn't do.
We won't all be here this time next year,
so while you can take a picture of us.
We're definitely going to hell,
but we'll have all the best stories to tell.

I always phone a specific branch, not necessarily my local one, because then the call is included in my minutes that comes with my mobile phone package.

Not many people know that you can actually dial them for cheaper/free

When your in a safe place even if your not
Go to www.saynoto0870.com
Type samaritans in and a whole list of landline numbers come up for them.

So you can actually ring them for free if you have free landline call/minutes

According to other posts I have seen here samaritans does have a freephone number for mobiles - 116 123. I haven't used it though. Perhaps it needs better publicity?
