I'm not sure of any dyes that might go over black as i usually die darker than lighter if that makes sense?

Hairdressers are able to strip your hair colour which would then mean you would go back to your natural colour, and i guess you could dye over that if you wanted to?

Oh dear, not sure this made sense at all! Sorry, hope you get things worked out <3

You can strip your hair to a point with Head & Shoulders.

I just bleach over mine which does goes ginger, but you can easily get that out with toner. Or Live XL tends to be pretty good although I've never used the red over black so I am unsure weather that would turn out well or not.

Bleach is probably your best bet and then put the colour on. The only problem is it may not go the colour you want exactly :/

Maybe the best bet is to get it stripped or grow it out? Long process I know!

However, mine was black and I did the whole bleaching and toning and it worked.

L'oreal Color Rays, it's made specifically to dye bright colors over dark hair without bleaching. BUT, it comes in small packages and is meant more for highlighting than all-over color. And it only comes in fuschia, red, and blonde.

Back in the day when I had a regular hair color, I used the fuschia over my dark brown and it came out REALLY bright. It was awesome. So maybe try that?

Or, you can bleach and dye. If you're looking for all-over color, that's your best bet.

I use Colour B4 to strip black hair dye out of my hair, beware though that some black hair dye does contain peroxide and may cause a blonde/red/orange tone when using Colour b4.

As a Punky Colour loyalist, I'd recommend any of their reds (especially Vermillion Red. Sooo bright.)

Reminds me of when I used a colour stripper. It smelled of rotten eggs. No joke. It took weeks to get the smell away. :( never again lmao.

I'm sure they all won't smell that way though.

Manic panic wont cover the color, you will have to bleach it LIGHTTTT to get it to work, lighter then someone with natuarlly light hair would have to have it. *Has had dyed black hair going on 8 years*
You can go to a hair stylist and pay a ton to have them strip the color, but there normally not able to get a lotttt. Depends how long you have been dying it. My sister let me do hers for fun one year, and she didnt care for it, used Dawn dishwashing soap every single day and it faded the color FAST to a real pretty dark red. Bleaching will get it lighter, but will KILL your hair. I had to chop of almost all of my hair after trying that :(
