We are male and female. We are artists, athletes, and students. We have depression, PTSD, eating disorders, bipolar disorder, or maybe no diagnosis at all. Some of us were abused, some not. We come from all walks of life and can be any age. We are every race or religion that you can think of. Our common link is this: We are in pain. We self-injure. And we are not freaks.

Stalk in systems analyse and design we were told that some people consider observing people in the work place to be akin to stalking people, and so could result in getting non reliable data.
I hope you all stay strong and take better care of yourselves than I have been known to do in real life.

My psychology degree covers ethics, it states that people can be observed in a setting that they would normally expect to be on view, i.e a public place such as a cinema or cafe. Shouldn't infringe on their personal space though and if they notice you paying particular close attention to them then you should have a pre-prepared participant information sheet and debriefing sheet explaining what it is you are doing and offer them the choose to have any data concerning them removed. One of my next assignments involves observation, it's such an interesting topic/area
You're right that it is a minefield and a bit of a grey area at times!!!
