I explained to him that I'm sorry I hurt him but that I believe it to be true and pointed out he's said it himself at times with different words. Like, I'm not one to take back things that I meant. But I understand there's different ways of approaching things and that I can come across as extremely harsh and critical.

Hmm it's good you said you didn't mean it to come off harsh Lana, but I agree, it's better to say what you mean and it sounds like he does agree with you at times. Can you maybe come to a compromise? And he tries having fun with friends while being sober? Having to drink alcohol to have fun isn't great :/
