I miss the whole web from back them. Since web 2.0 and Facebook, Twitter, tumblr etc people often just post short quips and photos of what they ate and clothes they want lol.
I do think that the reason on V2 people were replied to within 5 minutes was because the community as a whole was incredibly active. I would log on every evening and speak to all of the friends I had made on RYL and we'd all reply to each others threads. The community, before the documentary, was also smaller and we were like a family.
Now I guess we don't really have a community feel so much any more, and lots of members kind of join for a little while and leave again (nothing wrong with that) but it's a bit harder to make 'regular' friends (well it has been for me).
Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

Same here. I only have a few, but they are very much appreciated. Only one is on facebook.

It was mentioned before but I think all the name changes sort of backfired that way. People don't recognise people like they used to. Everyone should change their names back lol
Yeah, name changes aren't very helpful at all. If it's just one or 2 very infrequently you can keep up with it but otherwise it's at best really difficult.
Personally I think name changes should be banned except in special circumstances, e.g., a family member has found out their name and are hacking in to see what they have/are writing.
Sometimes I am talking to/or supporting someone I don't think I know, but then after several posts I get, Hello Fragile, it's me soandso and I think what the heck! I didn't have a clue it was you!
As for friends, I had loads on v2 and I felt cared for and used to print and cut out positive and complimentary posts to me and put them in a morale booster envelope. I've still got it! Now unless you're in with the in people if you get what I mean friendships are hard to strike up.

It's interesting reading this as I joined with the doc and ive been a member of staff pretty much all of the time I've been a member.
I think some of the changes have come about because that's what members want and sometimes I think members have really pushed the buttons so rules need to be brought in. E.g. the ed board when I first joined was great, it soon became sooo triggering so rules got brought in which did end up in the board being changed but it couldn't continue.
Trigger labels have been really relaxed from what they were yet people continue to add there own so it's a really difficult balance!
I think as a community grows things naturally change and that appeals to some and not to others.
Maybe it's worth doing a vote on usernames?

If username changes were banned people would just end up creating more new accounts than they already do ;)
Also, there were plenty of people complaining about 'cliques' and not being in with the 'in crowd' back on v2. I don't think it's significantly worse now, I think people tend to idealise the past.

New accounts are actually the way to go according to the most used excuse for a name change - security. Just changing an account name won't make an existing account anonymous if there is a past post history on Google. If people know me online as "Isoverity" I cant change my name and expect to be unfound - account will be the same. If people freshly look for me as Isoverity I cant be made anon with a new name because I have years of Google posts that will still lead to same account. A name change is false security
If people really want to be secure and anon then they need a new account. What happened at RYL was it because some kind of statement to change usernames for reasons of mood ("I don't feel my name really reflects who I am now" - I read that one a million times), fashion etc. Many forums don't allow name changes precisely because it leads to chaos and excess work load. Many members return after a break and say they can't recognize anyone because of all the name changes. I recall a weeks long poll I posted showed 70% of members had changed their names. A forum cant build a stable sense of identity, community etc when 2 of 3 people are changing their usernames.
I think there is more of an 'in-crowd' now than back then. I mean who has come up with the current criteria for being a mod/supporter? The mods and supporters. I'm not being rude just pointing out its not as much of a democratic decision as it was in the old days. I daren't be controversial in a post anymore as that gets you in trouble whereas you could be more open back then.

I don't agree. There was a massively 'in-crowd' back then. Most of them have left now. There were always the same complaints. There is nothing stopping anyone from replying to threads in a supportive manner, you don't have to be a supporter to do that. I remember multiple threads on v2, even before the supporters existed, where people said that they felt awkward posting a supportive reply after a mod had, because they were 'just' a regular member.

To be fair, I don't even know who the 'in crowd' are supposed to be now ;)

I feel my RYL stalkage is not quite up to scratch, which is disappointing considering I do still seem to spend half my life on here :P

That documentary brought unwanted attention to most of the people involved in it - including Libby. If it were up to me I'd have it buried and forgotten.
In the past the in crowds were quite open about it I can think of the gay's, the QK's and so on. I don't think we have such an open clique now well if we do it's passed me by although I may well go ohhh when I hear about them! I don't see why you would be banned for naming the current in crowd unless you were flaming?
In addition I don't think whilst I've been a mod there have been any changes in the recruitment of new mods but I do agree that the mod team has been seriously depleted and we are remedying that but these things take time.

I just hope the habit of picking popular posters is avoided. Being a mod is like being a cop. Taking a popular poster who is active and making them a mod is self defeating. Its like taking a popular person at a party and making them a bouncer - that kills the party. I could have cried when Tears and Rain got made a mod lol. Threads just died a little. A place needs some popular posters more than post jockeys (no offense to post jockeys!)
