Halloween Vegetable

When i was a child we used to scrape out turnips and make a face with them and balance candles inside to go halloweening, one year did the same with a big poatoe. Are there others in here that have never scraped out a pumpkin? Are pumpkins as sturdy as turnips? I have never had dealings with a pumpkin and i feel turnips are underlooked now as a halloween vegetable. I feel the urge to buy a turnip this year maybe 2 just incase things dont go to plan mmmm. I am not even sure what i would use to scrape a turnip out with? They are a tough beast mmm knives then a spoon or some jaggedy scraping melon nut type grabby firm flesh typed grabby type thing, i am looking forward to this .

For some reason pumpkins feel totally seem alien to me , im imaging them as some kind of american peach ? I feel proud i have never touched one and feel that the turnip is a finer halloween veg type candle holder.

I've never heard of anyone carving a turnip before but I did carve a pumpkin this year! It's a raven! I would post a picture but I don't have a camera.

They are definitely sturdy enough to carve if you get the right kind. There are actually varieties of pumpkins they grow just for carving purposes. As a kid we went on school field trips to the pumpkin patch and everyone got to pick out their own pumpkin. It's sort of a childhood ritual here.

When you say "its a raven" ? Shape of a raven or is that a type of pumpkin.

You must be a northerner! Yes, I was of the turnip brigade too, especially in the younger years of my life, when my parents could not afford pumpkins. I have had the good fortune/misfortune (whichever way you look at it) to carve a pumpkin too, though. Pumpkins are a little easier to carve, in my opinion. Definitely sturdy, but incredibly stinky. Both the flesh of a turnip and the flesh of a pumpkin, once cooked, taste delicious.

We used to have turnips when I was very small, then we graduated to pumpkins. A friend once used a marrow, which I thought was quite impressive.

We used to use turnips, when I moved to uni first time around people thought that was weird. I decided it must have been a Yorkshire thing!

I'm in the US if that explains it. Maybe it's a regional things but turnips aren't very popular here. I had to look it up to make sure I was thinking of the right thing.
