Jimmy Savile Scandal

I've been hearing about how Jimmy Savile's victims didn't report the abuse to the staff at their "schools" because they feared punishment. Is anyone surprised? How long until we realize that "emotionally disturbed" people are people too?

The whole thing is disgusting.

IF its true, its awful. But we'll never know for certain i guess.

The media seem to be jumping on every little thing. Apparently he was a necrophiliac as well.

I dont like it that the media/people seem to be taking every detail of every account as gospel truth.

This. I also don't believe that none of these people are out for anything other than financial gain, which is also pretty sick.

I agree with the OP.

And, I know money can make things seem... sordid. But if it can pay for things to improve their quality of life, like decent therapy, etc, then surely that's no bad thing, I don't think.

I've not been watching TV or reading articles in detail, I have to say.

As a personal note, if it was possible for me to have some even minimal financial compensation from the schools that allowed the bullying to go on every day for years, and which left a lot of damage in me, believe me I wouldn't complain. After all, the effects of the bullying has meant my quality of life is reduced, and I am limited in the work I can do now as a result.
Just to put some more 'human' perspective on it.

Agreedx

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the government were breifing against the BBC. The right-wing press, especially the Murdoch empire, has really gone for them on this point, even though they (the BBC) were largely blameless.

Life would be pretty boring if we just went around listening to victims of abuse all the time, no?

All we have to go on is many victims and pretty much everyone who worked with him, right?

Also, the BBC seems to be mostly concerned with protecting it's image.

it's pretty awful :( so bad that it went on so long and nothing was done to stop him.

I don't know about people saying they don't believe them, surely that's why they didn't come forward to begin with? :/

don't get me wrong I guess it's possible some of them aren't telling the truth, but I think it's better to listen to them and find that out before passing judgement on them! otherwise that attitude is just part of the problem imho

supposed victims.

theres no proof. it seems unfair to talk as if every detail definitely did happen when no one knows for sure.

With so many different unrelated women describing his 'process' with them in such similar detail it cannot be denied that there were definitely victims and given how much he travelled and how big a star he was, there will definitely be a large number of them.
Is everyone who is coming forward with their story a victim? Highly unlikely.

The necrophilia comment came from a man just being moronic, that was probably a one off rumour he heard years ago and he's just saying it for effect.

What I really don't like is that necrophilia comment is taking light away from one man at the BBC saying that the scandal is not 'that bad' the girls were 'old enough' and basically saying it was ok because 'there are worse things to have happened to younger people'

Words cannot describe my rage at those comments.

Another instance of the media dismissing violence against girls and women.

How many ticks left in that clockwork heart?

True. We can never be 100% certain that any of this is true. There is always the possibility that supposed victims are making things up. But the evidence points to this man as well as others having done something wrong.

The fact that people from these alternative schools are being given less credibility really just irks me to no end.

Freddie Starr got accused near the beginning of all this by two people no one has accused him since he went on the television to say he'd never done anything like that nor would he ever....

If all the rumours are true then it should have been kept quiet by the police and all involved until eveyones stories were taken, it makes it hard to believe when pretty much every single detail is published/broadcast,of course people stories are going to sound similar if its all over the county being shouted at us everyday.

Im not saying it didn't happen nor am i saying it did,the guy is dead and its turning into a circus.

ironically people didn't come forward because of celebrity culture and thus his status, now they are all coming forward and media is obsessed for the same reasons :S

bah, I hate celebrity culture, really makes society even more vacuous and superficial :(

Are you joking? The Beeb is actively investigating itself in a large-scale operation, and reporting about it as it goes along. Compare the way this was handled to, say, how phone hacking was covered in The Times, this is completely different.
