Dreams.. Possessed? What's going on?

I don't know what going on anymore. A few months ago I was dozing on my bed with a hangover when I woke up but couldn't move. I was completed paralyzed but I could hear and see my surroundings. It was such a strange sensation, my phone was in my hand but I could move my fingers to call anyone. Eventually I concentrated so hard on my left hand, I was able to move it and snapped me out of this paralyzed state. It kind of shook me up but I thought nothing of it. A couple of weeks later it happened again when I fell asleep on my sofa downstairs - I wasn't hungover and hadn't been drinking since the first time it happened. About a month later it happened again whilst my boyfriend was staying with me, again I remember that I had concentrate on moving my hand/arm to snap myself out of the state. My boyfriend said he heard me yell before I came to.

The last time it happened, was a couple of weeks ago.. I don't know whether it was a dream or what? It was too real, I've never had nightmares, let alone ones that effect me for the rest of the day/week. In the dream I was downstairs in my kitchen looking when my mum appeared behind me with a vacant look on her face. Then she yelled "You can't kill a demon!" I started hitting her with one of our kitchen chairs and I started yelling "You can't kill a demon!" too! Then I was back in my room, "asleep" but again in this paralyzed stated, instantly I knew I had to concentrate on my arm to snap out of it which I did and then I went to the toilet. I looked in the mirror to wash me face but my mirror image wasn't moving and screamed at me "YOU CAN'T KILL A DEMON" I rushed back into bed with my boyfriend and then apparently woke up clutching him. I dont know, it sounds crazy.. but Im so scared of it happening again. Before I fell asleep that night, we found a frog outside our front door. My dad picked it up and put it in the bushes, but late that night it was back at the front door again. This time I picked it up and put it in the bushes and then it never returned. I googled frogs.. and is often a sign of the devil/demons.. O_O Just so know, I hadn't been watching any 'scary' or anything.

Am I actually going crazy? The most recent time was the night of 15th March (my birthday) I dont know why its happening.. I don't want to talk to doctors or anything about it, they'll think Im insane!!

Sorry for going on for so long..!!

You're not going crazy. What is happening to you is either 'sleep paralysis' or 'false awakenings' or a combination of the two. I experience it too, on occasion, and understand how unpleasant and scary it is! It's a phenomenon which is sometimes partly hereditary and is sometimes a manifestation of high stress levels. As far as I know, aside from being really not very nice, it's not dangerous. I know that after a minute or less of waking up paralysed, I will always be able to break free from it - though that can be hard to remember when you're confused and just waking up out of sleep!

I can't remember exactly how it's caused so it might be worth Googling, but I think it's something to do with waking up from REM sleep - the dreaming sleep, where the brain paralyses the body partly so you can't harm yourself during dreaming - but the brain wakes up shortly before the body does, leaving you aware of your surroundings but unable to move. It is temporary.

Some people experience it with hallucinations. Hallucinations upon falling asleep are called 'hypnagogic hallucinations' and ones upon waking or during sleep paralysis are 'hypnapompic'. My dad has spoken before of seeing giant spiders in front of him, which weren't there. These types of hallucinations are perfectly normal and have been experienced on occasion by a fairly large percentage of the population.

If these experiences continue to be frequent for you, I would suggest seeing a doctor as they are sometimes a sign of sleep disorder.

Okay, that's giving me a bit of comfort, thanks =) Im still scared of falling asleep sometimes, just in case it happens again. I suppose if I had to guess, they've been happening once or twice a month, but they seem to be getting progressively worse/more frightening//real. I dont know anyone in my family who have experienced the same sort of thing.

With the last one, it really scared me and I had to have my boyfriend with me at my house to sleep. I haven't had any hallucinations.. yet! If I have any more, or when I do it is worse than the last I will go to the doctors.. reluctantly!

I second the sleep paralysis thing, my sister has it and she wakes up but can't move/breathe, and gets really upset over it
