:grin:Hey, I'm new to the site after being referred here from someones question on yahoo answers, but I'm looking for advice, I think I'm bipolar, but it could be just depression I guess or hormones, (I am 14). But I've only started to think of these recently-ish. For about the last year I would randomly get depressed maybe once every few months and be upset and unhappy for no reason, thinking everything was my fault and that the world hated me & tbh wanted to die, I also cut myself to try feel something else than 'unhapiness', my thoguhts also rush alot and I cant control them, and the unhappy periods have lasted from a day or 2 too a couple weeks. There's lots of other things to which seem to also be similar to causes, But the question is if I goto the Doctor will they tell my parents, will I be applicable for some kind of medication to help? When I'm depressed and cut it also feels likand my family would laugh, Mum once noticed a cut on my arm and instantly said You're not cutting yourself are you? That's for girls. That instantly p*ssed me off not helped by rest of family laughing too, so i lied and said it was a bike accident :( Also I do sometiems regularly cosider suicide, i mean for me, Why not? no one would give a F*ck. but if i didn't say any of these "harmful" thoguhts to a doctor would they thinkk its not as bad and get a non working medication, and Im in the UK how should i go about an apointment? Goto the GP and book in advanced? Just turn up? I dont know and it worries me :( Also the reason i decided to post here today was earlier I heard voices as I lost it, (Smashed my phone up in anger because it fell out my backpocket on bike, kicked into road and stomped on it, several times, glad i didnt take it out on a person but thats £400 gone) they were distant and faint but they were there telling me to do things , like really bad
Thanks for reading and sorry if you think im wasting your time and arent but instead something else, thanks, also is the voices connected
It sounds like there's a lot going on for you right now and a considerable amount of thoughts and feelings related to it too. I am thinking that given how depressed you get, that you self harm and think of suicide then you certainly should see a GP. Whether you are bipolar or not (and nobody here can tell you if you are), the doctor will be able to provide you with help for dealing with these feelings.
I don't live in the UK but with regard to a doctors appointment I would suggest you book in advance. I'd also suggest you write down a list of things that are worrying you (the thoughts, voices, self harm, depressed feelings) and tell or show these to the doctor. That way you make sure you've remembered to tell them everything.
I would not recommend asking if you have bipolar. Bipolar is characterised not only by depression but also manic highs which I've not heard you describe here. Instead when you present your symptoms to the doctor let them tell you what they feel might be wrong, or they might refer you to someone else like a psychologist.
I don't see why a doctor would give you a non-working medication even if you don't mention the thoughts, but in the interest of getting the best possible help for you right now (which you really do deserve) I'd say try and tell the whole story about what you feel and think, that way they can give you the best treatment possible. But if you tell the doctor what you think you have it might impact their decision, it's better to just let them hear the symptoms and then they will decide.
Could you phone the doctors clinic and ask for an appointment?
I'm proud of you for wanting to get some help for this, it sounds like you could really do with some support right now. Incidentally some individuals hear voices in times of stress, particularly those with mental health issues, so it's certainly worth mentioning to the doctor.
Oh, and you're not at all wasting our time, I'm really glad you were able to post here today.
Yeah, I can only second what Aimee said. While we can't diagnose you, you don't seem to be exhibiting any of the highs associated with bipolar. Just go to a doctor as soon as you can and answer their questions as truthfully as you can and they'll do their best to help you.
And I'm sorry your mom doesn't understand self injury. Parents don't realise how much of an impact things like that can have on us. Maybe you could try educating her on SI a bit? Letting her know that anyone can have this issue, it's most definitely not "just for girls."
Best wishes
Becky
Let's make a thousand mistakes. We'll never learn..
Meine Haut ist mir zu eng, ich kann nicht atmen.
Meine Venen liegen offen. Langsam wird mir klar
Die Hölle ist so nah...

Thanks I will go then, I do get highs as often as I get the lows however, just im low now :(
& Thanks, I'm scared she'll think I'm some freak or just think it's random :( anyidea on what I could say or is that up to me? but thanks again :)
As for your doctor, most GP surgeries open around 9am call then to try get yourself an appointment as you may find they have no emergency appointments available.
GP's dont normally advertise the mental health issue, however they are the first step to getting yourself help, they can prescribe medication, they can also setup referrals for if you need more help.
Just sit down and tell them everything its the best way to get the help needed. And your doctor wont see you as a freak, just someone who needs some help, you im sure wont be her first or last that will have told her of that im sure.
As for what to say start at the beginning say how youve been feeling low, and how it makes you feel, and they should help you take it from there.
I just went on Google and found some pages. You can read them and see if there's anything you want to say, or you could even just send your mom the links.

Lack of sleep affects a lot; your mood, your ability to remembe and concentrate etc. It may influence the stress you're under and therefore the perception of hearing voices (may) be increased in this time. Notice my use of the word "may" there - one cannot tell what is the exact cause, and disturbances in moods tend to have a loootttt of causes interacting.
But. You've had this going on you say for about a year, so it's worth checking out. And let's speculate you have some sort of mood disorder for a moment - that can actually cause sleep disturbances. So it's a bit like the chicken and the egg of which came first!
But for instance when I am tired if I don't sleep well, my mood takes a dive, I'm irritable, and lately I've started to see things in the corner of my eye cause my perception is really off too. My "seeing things" doesn't bother me though cause I know it's just I'm super tired and misinterpreting something (like a lamp post) as a human -.-
If it bothers you though, it's worth mentioning. Always :)
Also, if they don't specify helping with mental health it is still worth it, even if they can't help you then they can find someone who can. But most doctors have at least a baseline understanding of mood disorders such as depression.
Wishing you all the very best with your making of the appointment. Let us know how it goes :)

It is really important that you mention all your symptoms, especially the ones that make you think you are bipolar (thoughts rushing, etc) because if you are bipolar and you take a typical antidepressant the results can be disastrous. A doctor told me once that 25% of all people who experience severe depression before they are 16 are bipolar (no clue if this is true) and getting really angry of that is typical of bipolar teens (though it can be a symptom of depression as well). Even if you aren't diagnosed you should tell people around you to watch for signs of mania if you take an SSRI

Thanks, I'm gonna start a list of things that are wrong like suggested earlier, Interesting statistics and I had no idea it was related to anger, also, Whats an SSRI and Thanks :)
An SSRI is a type of medication for mental illnesses, particularly depression but is also used to treat other conditions. If you are given SSRI's the doctor should monitor you for any sort of side effect. And if they don't suggest it you should just make them monitor you by coming back within a week of taking them (or sooner if you have side effects).

Ah thank you for clearing that up, Going tomorow because of Sunday & Bank Holiday Monday they have been closed :( Great, Thanks
Good luck with the doctor's appointment. I hope you're looking after your leg. I also want to say that it's not true that no one would care if you died, of course they would. I would. You've a whole life ahead of you, please try not to think of throwing that away. I know you prbably can't help it, maybe you need to work on your self esteem too, to realise that you are important and you are loved and valued in this world. As for your mum, I'm sure she doesnt want to think her child who she loves so much is hurting himself, so she could be using humour as a way of coping with the evidence that you are, like she doesn't want to believe it. I'm sure she wouldn't laugh if she knew what you're going through.
