A case of hepatitis A has been confirmed in a food handler at a McDonald's restaurant in Lethbridge, Alta.
Alberta Health Services issued a warning Friday that anyone who ate or drank at the Scenic Drive McDonald's, located at 217 Third Ave. S., from Aug. 20 to 22 may have been exposed to the liver disease.
"While we believe the risk to the public is low, hepatitis A is a serious infection," Dr. Lorne Clearsky, AHS medical officer of health in southern Alberta, said in a news release.
"A vaccine administered within 14 days of exposure can greatly reduce the risk for patrons who consumed food or beverages at this location during this timeframe."
AHS will be offering the hepatitis A vaccine to any customer who consumed food or drink from the fast food outlet on the relevant dates.
"Given that summer is a busy time for travel between Lethbridge and other southern Albertan communities, AHS has decided to open the Calgary-area clinic to ensure the hepatitis A vaccine is more accessible for those outside of the Lethbridge area," Clearsky said.
In Calgary, hepatitis A vaccination clinics will be held at the South Calgary Health Centre on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
In Lethbridge, hepatitis A vaccination clinics will be held at the west pavilion of the Lethbridge Exhibition Park on Friday from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
People who have had a hepatitis A infection in the past, or who have previously received two doses of the vaccine, are not as risk of infection.
Hepatitis A is spread through the fecal-oral route. It's usually contracted by direct contact with an infected person, but can also be contracted by eating contaminated food or drinking contaminated liquids.
Lol we almost stopped at that Mcdonalds on our way home the other day but i decided we'd wait a bit longer till we got home - luckily! :p
And they may not be 'that bad' but they do seem to get into the news for very obscure health and safety violations...
did anyone hear about the radioactive shrek glasses they provided with KIDS happy meals?
Not too long ago, i have some of these and just use them for show now instead XD *is obsessed with all things shrek*
my name is kate and I used to work for mc donalds so I know exactly what goes on behind the counter
Well you do where you worked yus, but not at EVERY one, my best friend worked for maccys when i lived at home, that was minging, yet where I live now, its a bit better.
But the staff should have better hygene, if they have something as easily spread as hep A, shouldnt they be taking precautions. Obviously theres a chance that they didn't know they had it, but it still relates to hygene, they shouldn't have been touching the food or coughing/sneezing on it.
Over here tho i have heard of people in Dairy Queen (kinda like maccy D's) spitting on burgers/dropping them on floor then using them..
And thats why you're always nice to fast food people o-o
I agree I have worked in several mcdonalds and I have not seen anything out of the ordinary some of the mcdonalds employees take their jobs extremely seriously and idk they like everything proper and freak out if they seen any of that

Agreed. :P Even places that aren't fast food, if they serve me food at all, I am one of the most polite people on the planet, please and thank you at the end of like every sentence, a smile on my face, laughing when I am expected to laugh. Hell, I am lovely to the most miserable of people working behind that counter/bar/waiting my table. So many places I've gone to and I'm like "..How did you get hired with that kind of attitude and I'm still unemployed with this attitude as the CUSTOMER."
Nevertheless, I don't say anything, because I don't want ANYTHING not meant to be consumed in my food. I don't even send things back..even if they're crap. Just in case :P
I'm gonna tap him like a maple tree. I'm gonna search him for some syrups. I'm gonna be having sex with him.

XD ya that's my philosophy too...theres a lot of teenage boys here working in fast food, that can be very very spiteful
This can happen anywhere, it's not unique to McDonalds! I know of a few very, very good restaurants that have been slapped with environmental health warnings. Just because they charge an extortionate amount for some food doesn't mean they are squeaky clean.
McDs food in the UK is apparently much better than that in the States (can't comment on Canada) because here they have to cook things fresh and bin it after a set amount of time, unlike in the USA where they just microwave things up.
