Portraiture project help

Im trying to find a route to go down for my 3rd yr uni project. I know that I like these concepts ...

".....portraiture is not limited to recognition and faces are not blank composites of salient distinguishing features, but are active surfaces and shapes which constitute the expression or 'look' of a person.

Expression is such a complex product of nature and nurture, of voluntary and involuntary translation of states of mind or feeling into a physical form, that the successful interpretation of anyones expression is very difficult to attain, even if the expression is genuine and not contrived.

"nobody knows what he looks like, he knows what he feels like inside and that is all. Even when he looks at himself in the mirror he arranges his face to fit his inside feelings or else carefully refrains from seeing it"

Expression is now believe to be physiologically determind from the exterior muscular activity of the face, which affects mood, rather than the other way around. Basic emotions e.g. anger fear, disgust, with their associated expressions, seem to be universally recognisable. These bassic expressions do not reveal character or personality unless the basic emotion no longer depends on immediate circumstances has been transformed into a perennial character trait.
Most facial expressions - in reality or in art represent subtle varations, combinations and projections of the six basic emotions (surprise, disgust, sadness, anger, fear and happiness) that may become difficult to interpret if they substantially modify the physical character of the natural repertoire.

.... portrait artists eschew the representation of strong expressions of feeling because traditionally they are thought to reflect transitory states of being and ar therefore an obstacle to the artist who seeks to capture the essential stability of the self existing beneath the flux of emotions.

.... tend to avoid the unpleasant expressions because of their negative connotations unless their very negativity is exploited in caricature.

sanitizing of facial expression and the resulting imposition of conformist attitudes on the presentation of the subject allows the successful portraitist to encase his subjects within the masks of convention

I want to do portraiture but i need to make it a bit different and have a route to follow. any ideas?
