I really want to give blood too. but I need to gain a little bit weight first, and you're not allowed to have any cuts from the past 6 mounths...
(at least thats the rules in Sweden)

In australia the restrictions are,

over 16 under 70, no heart conditions, no tattoo's in the last 12 months, low iron levels for whatever reason, lived in the uk for over 6 mths between 1980 and 1996 and must be over 45 kgs

The questions they give you in addition are just as a medical history and determain if your a high risk group so they can do extra testing of your blood before they put it into the system.

I drank so much water before i went so they found a vessel very easly and to take the .5 litre of blood only took about 10 mins, due to my high consumption of water. the whole expereance was painless and awsome! i'm thinking of donating plasma next time, same process but the needle has to be in for about half an hr, i have no probs with needles or blood so i'm all good. they can take what ever they want :P

Thanks for your replys, and if ur thinking about doing it and can, GO FOR IT, it's a great feeling .

I can't give blood becuase I take meds for high blood pressure, it's annoying becuase I'm the type that can be used for universal donations.

I am on the bone marrow register though, seems that I'm allowed to give if it's ever needed.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

as soon as i saw this thread i freaked out.

i LOVE giving blood. maybe its the endorphins or karma or morbid fascination with my own blood. maybe its the neat little bandage. maybe its the fact that afterwards you feel high.
in any case....my old, inner drug-addicted masochist comes out with avengeance and dances like hell at blood drives. im going to donate platelettes this summer. SO EXCITED.

The first time I gave blood was at my school and I got pizza beforehand and then cookies and juice afterward. I also got to miss my business class because of it SCORE!!! But yeah I was kindof scared for some reason beforehand. I don't know why but I was. I think I was afraid of being triggered by all of the blood and the endorphine release and stuff. It was good though. I don't know when the next time I'm allowed to do it is,though.

its glad to hear so many people happy to give blood!
I fully agree anyone with health reasons or an extreme fear of needles should not have to give blood. However too many people I know have passed down giving blood for stupid reasons. One of my friends said she did not want to give blood because her blood was special and not for other people. I like her but I think thats abit much, how can someone pass down helping save a life just because they do not want to!

i used to give blood all the time and then they opened the plasma donation centers. they actually pay you to give plasma. i did the plasma thing for years until my SI became too obvious. i havent donated in about 5 years now. i really miss it. you can give plasma twice a week and they pay $25.00 each time. when youre broke that really comes in handy. and once they were doing something related to tetanus....and they gave me a tetanus shot and for the next couple months the tetanus vaccine was at high levels in my blood and they paid more for that. anyhow....i dont give anymore because my arms are so scarred.

I would love to give blood at school next year.
I'll be 17, which is the required age.
But I HATE needles.
Congrats to those who have the courage to do it!

I tried to give blood for the first time the other day but I got rejected But only for a month though! So I've got a couple weeks and then I can try and donate again. They wouldn't let me give blood because there have been a few people at work go down with hand foot and mouth.

Nice

I emailed the blood donation website a while back adn they said 12 month - same goes for any injury/cut.

I would love to give blood, but when I had a blood test, I fainted. (slightly ironic really as I SI and have never fainted or anything like that)

That would be because the injuries you inflict on yourself are done by you, you're in control of them, whereas needles aren't self inflicted obviously.
