Eating Disorder - black/brown stuff *might trigger*

So i had just purged and noticed some blackish or dark brown liquid stuff in the vomit. The only thing is that i hadn't eaten anything even nearly that dark today. Its probably nothing bad, but i was just wondering what it was. Any clue?

Is there any pain with it? Do you feel unwell? Was there a greenish tint to it? Do you purge regularly? Was there a lot of it?

I would go and get yourself checked out; it may be blood. If some ofthe contents resembled coffee granules then that is definately a sign of a bleed within your oesophagus/stomach that has been partially broken down by the acid and that needs to be looked at straight away so at A&E/ ER.

I purge almost everyday, once or twice a day usually. It did look like coffee granules, but no green tint. There wasnt any pain, but my stomach does feel a little wierd a the moment. I just had a physical check up with my doctor this morning and she didnt say anything was wrong with my throat.

As you say it sounds like coffee granules the it is advisable to get yourself checked out straight away at a hospital as this is a sign of damage to the structure of your stomach causing bleeding into it. The risk of this is high with people that purge.

This, unless you told your doctor of your problems, is likely to be picked up by a doctor at a check up as they can't examine that far down and your stomach is difficult for them to feel from the outside of your body (if they felt your abdomen) as it is mainly tucked up undr your lower few ribs

My doctor knows about the purging, but i hadnt seen this stuff in a while so i forgot and didnt tell her, and then now its here again. But there wasnt a lot of it, so i don't think its too bad. And there is no way i could go to an ER because my parents don't know about the purging. so i can't tell them.

If you go you don't have to tell your parents you purge. Yes, if you're under 18 then the doctors might tell them but your health is more important and I'm sure your parents woruld be happier knowing about it but knowing you've got help than you potentially getting worse. Dark blood like that is never a good sign and if there is enough for you to be worried then you should get yourself checked out; there doesn't have to be a lot there for there to be a problem. If you can't go to the ER could you talk to your doctor tomorrow? It would be a really good idea. If your doctor knows about your purging then that should make it a bit easier for you to tell them, they may not have asked about stuff to do with that today if you didn't say there was a problem so it would be a good idea to go and seek medical help regarding this alone.

That is a good middle ground Kelly :) Your doctor should be able to tell you if she needs to see you again right away.

Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.

Well, i've managed not to purge all day to maybe calm things down. I don't know.

But my doctor hasnt called me, but she probably will by the end of the week. And i was also thinking it could be bile, but then again what do i know?! To answer you're question jenny, i am getting help. I see a nutritionist and a therapist, but my therapist is not working for the month of august.

Thanks so much for the concern everyone! You're all so helpful.

Bile tends to be a greeny colour which is why I asked if it had a greenish tinge. Some bile pigments are red but you'd usually see these along with the green; maybe then producing a brown colour.

Can you talk to a different therapist/ acounsellor/ have you got contact details of your local crisis team (presuming you're from the UK); they might be helpful whilst you are waiting for your therapist to return.

Well done on not purging; that is really good

So kelly what are you doing while your therapist is away? how are you finding thigs? im here if you want to talk just feel free to Pm me, cos i would really like to be updated on how you are doing.

Maybe it would be a good idea to ask your doctor for some Lanzoprosol, whis is what i am taking atm.

it is not a harmfull drug and has little to no side affects. it was given to me to prevent the risk of any more stomach ulsers, and to try and stop me from sicking up blood.

Atm it is helping me and although i stil purge, there is definately less blood in it.

Please go to your gp again and you will sort things out... honest!!!

Lots of love and best wishes. Jen xxx

It is best to talk to your doctor about all your problems and they will decide which med to give you as a result of that, yes it may be Lanzoprostol but there are several others used for the stomach and you may not even need meds at all, it depends on the problem so giving the doctor full, accurate information about what is happening is a good idea and it will make them more forthcoming than if you go and say, 'I think I need x med' when the problem you have may not be an ulcer and could be something different; only a doctor can tell after a thorough examination.

Thankyou everyone! And yeah nevermind about it being bile. I havn't seen it since that day...because i havn't purged since then! Yay meeee! But my doctor still hasn't called :\....how long does it usually take to get the results of a blood test?

...annndddd I'm not from the UK i'm from the US actually. I'm alright without my therapist. I've seen my nutritionist during the second week this month and i just saw my doctor the other day and i can talk to both of them about things going on. I'm dealing i guess, maybe not so great but im ok. Thanks for caring :] it means alot.

It depends on the blood test, some, you get back the same day, some it can take a couple of days, some it can take a couple of weeks. It depends upon the test and whether it has to be sent away to be analysed or done at the surgery. You can call up the surgery and see what is happening/ ask if they have an idea when you'll get them; that might be useful.
