possible BPD?

I have a very strong possibility of having borderline personality disorder. For most of my life I have tried to find why I am the way I am. Why I do certain things and behave in certain ways. I had no answers until I read up on BPD it was like reading an article all about me. Everything I read on it I can relate to and it feel like such a relief. I just have one major problem! I cannot seem to get my doctors to take me seriously. I believe they think I am lying about my mental health issues. They do not seem to take me seriously at all. I was discharged from secondary services back in February and a week a go I saw the letter sent to my GP from the psychiatrist and it was full of lies. The whole letter was just a bunch of lies a bout me. I am now waiting for step 4 in psychological services, I have been waiting since February and have been told I still have a 2-3 month wait! I am tired and stressed and have no idea how I am going to cope when no one seems to believe me?

Sorry to hear that your experience with services so far has been this negative.

I think the first step is to go back to your GP and explain your dissatisfaction with what the psychiatrist has put in the letter. It is okay to ask for a second opinion, or highlight what you think your biggest problems/symptoms are. As you are on a waiting list for therapy it might be viewed that you're going to receive support soon, but if you feel like you can't wait that long then it's important to tell your GP what is making things so difficult. They might be able to see you more frequently to monitor your mental health, or refer you back to a CMHT if necessary. Try to be as clear as possible; list what you're experiencing and how it is impacting on each area of your life (e.g. relationships, work, physical health, personal interests).

I would advise caution against self-diagnosis, though. Even if you have a good understanding of mental health, it is difficult (if not impossible) for anyone to assess themselves accurately. BPD can be diagnosed quite easy because there are so many combinations of symptoms, and it may be that there is a better way of understanding and treating what you are going through. Only a psychiatrist or psychologist can make a diagnosis, and personality disorders in particular take a while to diagnose.

I hope you feel you can speak with your GP (don't be afraid of seeing different GPs until you find one that listens to your concerns). It is really frustrating waiting for support to be provided. In the meantime feel free to keep posting here; talking can be a very therapeutic way of coping.

If you feel your GP isn't listening to you would it be possible to see someone else? You are entitled to a second opinion and to the support you need.

I agree with the above about being careful about self-diagnosing, as it is a complex thing. So it is best to leave it to the professionals to do that. It doesn't mean that you can't bring up your concerns with them though. Keep fighting, you will make it through
