Fears Bonjela could be fatal for children

One of the most commonly used teething gels for babies has been linked to a potentially fatal disease.

British authorities say the active ingredient in Bonjela may put children at risk of Reye's syndrome - a rare brain and liver disease.

A similar ingredient in aspirin has also been associated with the disease.

Britain's medical regulatory body says while there have been no confirmed cases caused by Bonjela, it has issued a precautionary warning.

Australia's therapeutic drugs administrator is now considering warning labels on some oral pain relief gels.

It's not fatal, the suggestion is that adult Bonjela not be used for children (rather that they use the children's Bonjela) because there is a risk of developing a syndrome.

Bonjela containing salicylate's is not licensed for use in under 16's so parents shouldn't be giving it to their children anyway, instead an alternative by the same company is available. Bonjela are going to change the packaging in the next few weeks so people are aware that it's only for use in over 16's, currently it's just mentioned in fine print.

Well if people are stupid enough not to know the difference between adult bonjela and baby bonjela (and there is a significant difference) then that's surely their fault?

i think it applies to more than just babies though?

i have been using bonjela for years are i get recurrent mouth ulcers and my dad who also suffers from them used to always just give me a tube of bonjela to use. and at ages say 12 or 13 it would never have crossed my mind to use bonjela teething gel as its for babies. i think they should have made it more clear from the beginning, i had no idea bonjela was for over 16s.

my 'adult' bonjela says 4months+, the babies one is 2months+. I was brought up on the adult version because the other one didn't exist then. how many years have parent's been using the adult one for kid's who are teething? got to be at least 20 years and only now it's being found? We limit what we give to Chloe anyway, because she likes the taste far too much. The kid's version doesn't seem strong enough, nor does dentinox.
