15 tips for spotting a liar

A nice long weekend, that has been very relaxing. People who kept their eyes on the creative corner will know I've been writing again. So I guess WoW didn't comsume my life. But I have been enjoying time online in the evening. I hope to be working again next week, but that's an agency for you, it's hit and miss.

Quite often a person feels the need to lie about something - if you are the person being lied to, there are a few simple tips for catching the liar out. This is a list of the top 15 tips.

1.
Physical expression will be limited and stiff, with few arm and hand movements. Hand, arm and leg movements are toward their own body as the liar tries to take up less space.

2.
A person who is lying to you will avoid making eye contact.

3.
Hands touching their face, throat & mouth. Touching or scratching the nose or behind their ear. Not likely to touch his chest/heart with an open hand.

4.
Timing is off between emotions gestures/expressions and words. Example: Someone says, “I love it!” when receiving a gift and then smiles after making that statement, rather then at the same time the statement is made.

5.
Gestures/expressions don’t match the verbal statement, such as frowning when saying “I love you.”

6.
Expressions are limited to mouth movements when someone is faking emotions (like happy, surprised, sad, awe, ) instead of the whole face. For example; when someone smiles naturally their whole face is involved: jaw/cheek movement, eyes and forehead push down, etc.

7.
A guilty person gets defensive. An innocent person will often go on the offensive.

8.
A liar is uncomfortable facing his questioner/accuser and may turn his head or body away.

9.
A liar might unconsciously place objects (book, coffee cup, etc.) between themselves and you.

10.
A liar will use your words to make answer a question. When asked, “Did you eat the last cookie?” The liar answers, “No, I did not eat the last cookie.”

11.
A statement with a contraction is more likely to be truthful: “ I didn’t do it” instead of “I did not do it”

12.
Liars sometimes avoid “lying” by not making direct statements. They imply answers instead of denying something directly.

13.
The guilty person may speak more than natural, adding unnecessary details to convince you… they are not comfortable with silence or pauses in the conversation.

14.
A liar may leave out pronouns and speak in a monotonous tone. When a truthful statement is made the pronoun is emphasized as much or more than the rest of the words in a statement.

15.
Words may be garbled and spoken softly, and syntax and grammar may be off. In other-words, his sentences will likely be muddled rather than emphasized.

another one (which contradicts...) is 'good' or 'frequent' liars will stare into your eyes, because they all know the first one is not making eye contact and so have perfected this accordingly.

And I'm glad WoW didn't eat you

I don't like eye contact. At all.
I often get really nervous when I'm even saying hello to people, let alone having a conversation that could involve lying/telling the truth about something.
So I guess most of the time I can exhibit most of these actions...
Idk.

Now I'll play your ghost as my ace, whenever I'm led astray.
But I am actually good, can't help it if we're tilted.
I'm in my right place, don't be a downer.

Me too.

A lot of people don't make much eye contact and stuff, though. Kind of creeps me out when they do!

personally I have to grit my teeth and maintain eye contact. It's not something I'm comfortable with, but it's something I force myself though because it apparently makes you seem more trustworthy.

What about if you're socially anxious and do that anyways.

Hmmm most of these aren't true for me though. Maybe that's why I'm a pretty good liar.

I tend not to make eye contact ever though, but sometimes will when I'm lying because I know you are supposed to. And I always place objects in between me and the other person, regardless... hmmm....

Thank you for all of your help and support. I will no longer be coming to RYL. Semi-explanation will be inside my profile.

About the eye contact thing. It's not all the time. It's not like "oh this person isn't looking at me while they say hello and ask how i am, they must be lying and mean Goodbye and i hate you" :P When someone is directly asking you something, is when it applies. But also, it's not a tell by itself. If you never look someone in the eye, a person is not going to think you're lying becasue you're not looking them in the eye at that moment. There are body language indicators and stuff.

I'm a really good liar apparently, because I don't do any of that stuff when I lie.

I'm an awful liar.

I promise.

And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! -- Not a vegetarian

I think that although true in certain cases, alot of these imply that if a person does one of these things, they are a liar. In fact, you'd have to do a significant number of these for them to count as signs of lying. As stated above, not everyone is happy with eye contact. Different people behave in different ways.
