are table manners as important as how they used to be
I agree with the eating with mouth closed it disgusts me when someone eats with mouth open.
But what about Elbows on table
Not slouching
Waiting till everyones finished
Actually eating at a table as a family.
correct laying of table
When we go grans she's very strict on this but at home its just general but apart from a sunday night we do eat at the table even if its just me and dad.
At home my mum makes sure we do all of the things you said, especially the not slouching! But we have a tv in the kitchen so sometimes we have tv suppers (like on sunday nights if I'm home) but we still sit at the table.
At school without the parents however I eat disgustingly... like we eat on trays so all the food I don't want to eat gets tipped off my plate onto my tray, its pretty gross! We do wait for everyone on our table to finish, but elbows on table is pretty standard....
Good table manners are the kind of thing I will insist on when I'm older though.
I'm not crazy, I'm just a little unwell. I know, right now you can't tell. But stay a while and maybe then you'll see A different side of me Unwell - Matchbox 20

when in company and out for a meal i always have to use table manners. but at home me and my boyfriend usually just bring our meal into the living room and eat in there. i dont think family meals are as important now as they used to be.
Table manners are vitally important. I can't abide people who leave the table before everyone's finished, or sit there with their elbows on the table being blatantly rude and disrespectful.
Families as a unit have become less integrated so all the table manner aspects have deteriorated with it. If I'm at a friend's house or eating out in public then I will follow table etiquette such as the above, but at home I just do what I want.
Waiting until everyone has their food and until everyone is finished is just having manners and being considerate. I don't see why people don't do this, unless they are in private.
table manners are just as important as every day manners. Table manners have their place just as saying please and thank you.
Nothing irks me more than a person who starts eating before everyone has been served. Nothing aggravates me more than a person who leaves the table before everyone has finished. People who leave their cutlery scattered on their plate when they have finished really grate on me too!!!
And eating at the table as a family is definitely important. It's part of learning to socialise and a time to bond with the people closest to you.
You can always tell the children that don't eat at the table with their family because they have no manners, no concept of eating nicely or how to hold a knife and fork, no idea how to sit nicely. It annoys me so much.
All my life my family and I have eaten at least one meal together a day. At weekends and during school holidays etc we used to have lunch together too. For years it was the only time we really had together as a family because of school and work etc.
Table manners are really important to my family as well and, having been brought up like that, I don't see why it's so hard for other people to do things like wait until everyone's served, using cutlery properly etc.

the majority of the people who i eat with, i don't care about polite or any of that ****.
if i am at a formal dinner (uh, when?) then i will adher to all those rules, etc because i don't want to seem rude.
but if i am eating with my family or my close friends (who are the only people i eat out with anyway) then i don't care too much.
i like eating with family though. we have sunday dinner together every week because thats the only time everyone is home since my parents work monday-saturday evenings/nights.
I always leave my knife and fork together when I've finished. I try not to put my elbows on the table or slouch if its a posh do, but at home it's fine. We mostly eat in the lounge off of trays these days.
Oh but I always eat with my mouth closed, goes without saying.
Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her;
If you can bounce high, bounce for her too,
Till she cry "Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover,
I must have you!"

I grew up always eating dinner with my family, and my parents were strict about dining etiquette. Chewing with mouth closed, napkin in lap, sitting straight with feet under the table, elbows off the table, waiting til everyone is served AND mother takes the first bite, fork and knife together when finished eating, etc.
Like Lou Lou, I cant stand it when people don't have table manners. It annoys me.
Nous avons abrité tous les rêves du monde,
Et c'est dans le soleil que nous avons grandi.
I'm such a hypocrite when it comes to this...
well we always have TV dinners because parents don't exactly communicate so this is the easiest way to avoid convo... but the whole family is there if that counts!
Eating with mouth open is a no....
Generally I regard table manners very highly but I don't really follow them that well....
like my friend, when I take her round my house (I'm chinese) she plays drums with the chopsticks or shoves them in her hair. thats a DEFINITE no - i mean i don't play with knives and forks!!!!
And she slurps champagne. that's a no too.
using the right knives and forks if it's silver service is important to me!! as is putting napkin on lap as soon as you sit.
elbows don't bother me that much for some reason though!
ok so I REALLY highly regard manners!
As a little kid you believed in fairytales,
that fantasy of what your life would be: white dress; prince charming who would carry you away to a castle on a hill.
You closed your eyes and had complete and utter faith.
Eventually you grow up. One day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears.
But the thing is, it's hard to let go of that fairytale entirely because almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith,
that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true.
We usually eat together (unless i've been out and get back late, or my dad does or my stepmum does - then that person eats when they get in).
Always eat with mouth closed.
We never really sit at the table, (our tables in the garden cuz our kitchen is too small for it, so we only clean it and bring it in at christmas), thats the only time we eat at a table. Other times we just sit at the coffee table or have it on our knees in front of the TV.
Even at christmas, we don't eat that formally, we put elbows on the table and slouch but we don't have anyone over so it's okay.
I don't start eating until everyone has food.
When i'm out with family or friends, i'm still the same. I don't think table manners are as important as they used to be.

When I was at home, all us kids (four of us) would eat together at the table, unless we had exams to study for and then we'd eat in our rooms whilst we studied. My husband and I rarely eat together becasue he works at night :( but when we do eat together with my nan, it varies, soemtimes we sit at the table and sometimes we sit in front of the tele. But manners go either way. No elbows on the table, no slouching etc. And never chew with your mouth open. Or as my mum siad to us "don't eat with your mouth full!" :P
Table manners are important and I will be enforcing it when I have kids
