Ok so you know the big black box thing on a power supply? mine is getting so hot that it burns my hand to unplug the wire that runs to the plug from it. and i have to handle it by dangling it from the wire. it is on the bed, but on the edge of the mattress and not covered in anyway, it's either this or shoved down the side of the bed between the bed and wall.
anything i can do to stop it overheating? my battery is abysmal without plugging in i have less than an hour.
help.

Is it actually over heating or just getting hot? Mine is always really hot but still charges the battery. Also mine is hidden under a pile of clothes at the moment and is fine. Yes it does get hot but I see it as normal as it has been like that since day one. With the amount of power going through to charge a laptop it's natural it will get hot.
If you are really worried about it then only have it on for a certain length of time then use your battery for a bit whilst it cools down??
Do you have a cord that runs from the outlet and then plus into the power brick? If you have the wrong cord you can overheat it. If you bought a replacement those are sometimes defective these days
Erm, is there a fan in the unit? or air vents? Are they blocked. Could you put it in front of a fan or windowsil?
Sounds really dangerous, s'why I never leave my laptop on my bed unnattended.
IDEA: could you get sticky pads and attach it to the wall above the bed (or where ever) so that it can cool and be kept still in an area with freeflowing air.

it is the original cable that came with the laptop. so not a replacement/wrong wire from brick to plug.
it does not have any kind of fans or vents or anything to get blocked. it is a closed plastic box around the workings of it.
we have a window open directly blowing onto where it is, also a fan on the windowsill to draw cool air in and move it about.
i can't fix the box bit in anyway because it needs to be portable still, and the baby would grab it if its in her reach. what i do now is turn off and stash it down the side of the bed when she is up here with us.
i tried the switch off until battery about to die thing.. it doesn't cool down all that much in the 45mins or so that i have of battery life. also when it gets too hot it actually stops charging and my computer doesnt recognise that it's actually plugged in. i've blown a fuse already because of this (guessing).
any other ideas? mand x

that happens to mine - do you have an Advent laptop? i don't know what to suggest though :( though i believe you can get these cooling pads for laptops so maybe you can get them for the battery power supply too?
it's an acer. its happened since i had it, but only now having problems with it cutting out. i'm guessing a wire is working losse when it gets so hot it doesn't touch the contact or some such electrical shizz!

I have a problem with mine getting hotter than it probably should, and mine is an Acer too...
Now I'll play your ghost as my ace, whenever I'm led astray.
But I am actually good, can't help it if we're tilted.
I'm in my right place, don't be a downer.
Sounds dodgy and not something that is going to be 'fixable' or solvable. I've got an acer and have had no problems like that.
I'm guessing you've got no kind of guarantee for it?
You could put icecubes into a plastic bag, and sit the box onto that?

they arent overly expensive to buy, then again with this laptop i have a 2 year guarantee with it. already had it fixed once for a power supply issue.
Make sure it isnt a fault with your laptop nor the cable.. i wasted money by buying a new power cable that broke because of my fault laptop connection inside
