We all know the title of the next special. It was announced at the end of the last episode.

It's such a shame that we have to wait until autumn to find out what happens.
But that doesn't stop us talking about it.
OK, it sounds like it's taking place on Mars, hence the title. Which makes the Ice Warriors the most likely villain.
First encountered by the second Doctor in 1967. They made good protagonists in many adventures. The name of their race has never been revealed, everyone always referred to them as Ice Warriors because they function at their best in the icy temperatures of Mars. Heat actually kills them and that's mostly how the doctor defeats them again and again; turning up the thermostat.
They wear heavy armour, are stronger than humans by many times and I don't believe that their faces have been seen. But don't quote me on that.
Even if they aren't the villains of the episode, if it's taking place on Mars then they have to at least be mentioned since it's their home world.

The only ones I enjoyed were Blink & the other gas mask scary one which made me actually really really scared and now I hate gas masks (Y)

This year, instead of a series, they filmed 4 specials. an easter, an autumn and a two-parter regeneration special around christmas.

i thought of the ice warriors, it would be awesome if they are used or even referenced, but i doubt it. they couldn't even decide if they were good guys or bad guys in the 70s.
it looks good though. although i'm gonna have to have a full on who-fest as the easter one did not satisfy and its gonna be so long before this one is aired.

Well I think the ice warriors were deliberately ambiguous like that because they weren't good or evil really; they were out for themselves, taking advantage of anything that would aid them in the long run. sometimes that meant doing questionable things.
in all, they were kind of the most human of the aliens out there.

i'd still be surprised if the ice warriors were the next classic monster to be revived. i'd have thought the sea devils or silurians would be above them.
