Hey. So I got referred to my psychiatrist in february and have seen him twice since then. After each session he has written to my GP basically just detailing what went on in the session, i.e what was discussed in brief, what he's advised me to do etc. I don't have a problem with this as I know she (my GP) needs to be kept informed of whats going on. I also get a copy of these letters. I haven't had a problem with anything that has been said until I received the last one.
Just to give some background, I was asked about childhood experiences again in my last appointment and I opened up and told him about something that happened to me when I was a child. We didn't talk about it, I just told him, which was not a nice experience for me but I'm glad that I did it. It's something that has been festering in my head for some 15 years now and needed to come out.
So yeah, I receive this letter, get reading and then see - "she did tell me that she was the victim of sexual abuse for a period while she was growing up but she clearly did not want to discuss this issue." Now this could just be me, but was he right to mention that in a letter to my GP? I mean, he could have just said that I had an unpleasant experience as a child or something along those lines. I don't really mind that my GP knows as I trust her and get on really well with her. But imagine if I wasn't too keen on my GP? I would feel horrible going to my next appointment. To be honest I'm going to sh*t myself when I see my GP on wednesday incase she brings it up or something.
Urgh idk, maybe I'm just overreacting or something. It's not like I'm uber pissed off about it, I was just wondering whether he was right to say that or not. Like I said, I know my GP needs to be kept informed, but this doesn't exactly fill me with confidence to open up about other things with him. Anyway, I am due to see him again at the end of the month so I will discuss this with him. Just wanted some opinions really.
I think it's pretty standard for psychiatrists and doctors to liase with each other and to go into detail about what was discussed. They will still keep confidentiality and what you say wont go any further than it needs to.
If you are concerned though bring it up with your psychiatrist and see what he says.
Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…
you once called your brain a hard drive, well say hello to the virus.
bearing in mind i have to write to gp's in my job, we tell them everything that is relevent to them and us treating them. so i dont think this is out of the ordinary. also perhaps he knew how well you get on with your dr that he felt to continue to help you as much as poss she should know everything.
i hope everything goes ok at the dr's. if you dont want to talk about just tell her, she gets you. she will know when to push for more info and when to hold back a bit. to really try and "get over" it, it is prob best to try and talk about it at some point, i know it will be nasty. but in the long run maybe it will be for the best??
hugs xx

It is very appropriate for him to have informed your gp about this. Drs. and other health professionals are able to tell anything to other health professionals whom are also in charge of your care. Do you know what i mean?
Yeah, makes sense really. I guess I just didn't like seeing that on paper and the thought of people knowing about it. Urgh, I really hope my GP doesn't bring it up tomorrow. Ah well, thank you peeps.
Yeah, info is pretty much free within the profession, but obviously only goes as far as it has to. I'm sorry it's been so hard to see things on paper, but mayve this could help you to learn to overcome things in the future?
"Keep your heart open to dreams. For as long as there's a dream, there is hope, and as long as there is hope, there is joy in living."
hope it goes ok caz....having recieved 2 letters from the psych team recently i totally get how nasty it is to see everything on paper....it somehow makes it more real written down.
let me know how you get on with the gp, she will be lovely as always chick xx

i know the feeling, i didn't talk about my rape with anyone, but i did tell one person in an assessment, and then everyone in the crisis team knew, and my gp, and evry time i see a diiferent person they mention it. which i hate, and it bugs me that it was passed around.
