Posting funny things in General Chat

So I've posted a few funny things in general chat and had certain people complain and tell me that they should be in fun and distractions. Now I don't know about everyone else but I thought general chat was for everything but support threads? A few jokes aren't ongoing so I don't see why posting them in f&d would be any good? But there are threads going on in general (the special thread, talking to strangers for example) that could be moved to fun and distractions...

So I guess my question is, is there anything wrong wth posting funny things in general chat?

It seems like there's kind of a fine line with a lot of threads. I don't really see the big deal with where exactly a thread is, as long as it's generally in the right place.

I thought F&D was more just "20 Question Quiz" and "Word Association" type stuff.

If its just one/two threads posted by the same member then usually its fine in GC but if theres lots of threads with a joke in then usually its best to post them in F&D. Yes there are some threads that would be fine in F&D but they are ongoing threads that have been in GC for a while and its not really just for a distraction, unlike a joke.

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.

I have seen subforums at other forums, that are used just as a place to put mega threads that keep going and growing. I always thought that was a good idea - as opposed to having forums holding big threads that are often just vehicles for cliques of some kind or another. In some forums they might make more sense than others (Safe Room thread etc) but on the whole I'd store the mega threads somewhere else. Just my 2 bits.

i think it is different if there are plenty of jokes from the same member. or similar jokes.
it gets tiresome really quickly.

i would say f&d.

With amusing things going in F&D, anything news based or for debating in N&D, reviews and recommendations in a seperate forum, support in the support forums, more adult oriented stuff in vets, meets and pictures in seperate forums, relationship worries, piercing etc. stuff in general support and advice etc. etc. what actually is the purpose of general chat? What is "general chat" Why not simply call it "The place where random, pointless stuff that doesn't really fit anywhere goes"?

General chat is for amusing stuff that has a point. Something you can reply to, add input too, etc.

However, if you're posting a joke, the best replies you're going to get are "lol, that's awesome" or something. This doesn't generate discussion of any kind.

However, if someone had an amusing anecdote and then asked for other people's amusing stories, that would generate a discussion, or "chat" and would therefore be more than a waste of bandwidth.

Okay, so one joke would fall off the first page of F&D quite quickly, but a "jokes thread" wouldn't.

I suppose there's a jokes thread in vets. One could be used for general chat.

How many big threads do we need, though?

Would it be better if every joke was followed by a question to draw people into a conversation.

For example.

Q. Why did the chicken cross the road?
A. To get to the other side.

Have you ever crossed a road? If so, why did you cross it? Have you ever crossed a road dressed as a chicken? Please shae any humurous stories related to chickens or the crossing of roads that you may have.

Would that then be okay in general chat?

That could then lead to discussions about whether people cross over the road purely to walk around the inside of a bend or only if their destination is on the opposite side. It could lead to discussions about whether the chicken had any choice in corssing the road or if it was following a pre-set path that stated that the chicken was fated to cross the road for the sole purpose of generating humour. This would then surely need to go in news and debate if we are discussing fate. This could then lead to more philosophical questions relating to chickens including the classic chickn and egg question which could be deemed to be too silly for news and debate and would then need to be returned to general chat. If someone is a chicken and feels traumatised by the joke, it would then surely need to be moved to a support forum. If someone wants to organise a meet where they can cross roads dressed as chickens, it would need to be moved to events/meets.

Quite simply the path that the discussion leads to could have very different outcomes and require that the thread be posted in multiple forums. Therefore, why isn't every thread posted in every forum. This way no one ever needs to worry that something isn't in the correct forum because every thread will always be where it should be. I know that means that threads in serious support will be constantly knocked off as "This thread must always be in the top 5" but then we can't have everything. I think this is the best solution. The only other alternative is to lock all the forums so no one can post in any of them. That way there will never be a thread posted in the wrong place again and everyone can be happy.

Or every new thread can be submitted to the mods who would then post it in the correct place. But there aren't enough mods to do this and what if a mod posts it in the wrong place? That would surely lead to many more threads being created by people needing support for the dual horror of a thread being posted in the wrong place AND a mod getting something wrong. All these threads would then have nowhere to go and RYL would implode under restrictive rules designed to please everyone. Or is that what's happening now? Or has my point long been lost amid a stream or gibberish? Is anyone still reading this? What was the best thing before sliced bread? If you know the answer to this or any other question raised, feel free to keep that to yourself.

So to get back to the main point, jokes should be in F&D unless they aren't jokes and people want to reply to them and then they should be in general chat. Unless the jokes posted in F&D lead to a conversation in which case it should be moved back to general chat but not before that decision has been debated out and ratified by a comittee with at least a two thirds majority?

I'm not really sure where I'm going with this. I'll just simply say "I don't know".

It would be just as pointless but also amusing ;)

To be honest, I don't read any of a certain member's posts in GC because they're probably going to be joke threads that piss me (& others) off.

Oh gosh this made me laugh more that it probably should have :P

I guess GC = stuff that generates actual discussion; F&D = pointless stuff with no discussion. Not too complicated really.

If there was a joke thread, it should go in F&D.
And Jess, you need to chill out.

You could've saved yourself a lot of hassle with this whole thread making business ma'am.

So why complain about one persons threads but not about someone elses? WHen i'm feeling **** I like to post a joke that will make other people smile too. If you don't smile then big whoop stick me on ignore and leave me alone. stop making me feel bad for trying to share something that made me laugh.

Because no one else posts jokes frequently but you?

Stop trying to turn this into a personal thing. Just follow the rules. I'm sorry you've made a thread to try and prove you're correct and it's backfired.

I don't see why there has to be a discussion about topics in a forum that is supposed to be trigger free. What is the big deal about jokes being posted? I think if a member has an issue with a thread topic then they should report it to mods rather than turn the thread into a debate which could make the OP feel worse. Surely doing that borders on infringing the 'flaming' rule?

I think it's really unfair to target specific posts - in this instance, Jess'. Quite frankly, it's bullying. [And don't say it's not personal, I've just scanned her posts and not only have you done it on one thread of hers - but two. You know. Case she didn't see it the first time.]

How dare you accuse me of bullying when you can turn around and say a thing like that?

You're the only person that repeatedly posts jokes. I just think it would be more helpful to have one thread in F&D, where everyone can post their jokes and provide input. This is hardly bullying.
