CAMHS

Hey,
Right i'm not sure if this has been posted anywhere before and if it has feel free to ignore this or whatever but i was wondering if anyone could give me some help?

I have a CAMHS appointment in about 3 weeks time and i am really not sure on whats going to happen? Will my parents have to come in for the first one? What sort of things will they ask me? And generally what happens with CAMHS.

I have been in 2 different types of counselling and both times that ended up bad and im hoping CAMHS will be different? Are they any good and have they helped you before?

well they will do an inicial assesment even if theyve been told why your there, and then they will tell you a plan of action and then hopefully it will be carried out.

my personal experience with CAHMS isnt that good but ive heard many success stories as your seventeen they will probably consider transfering you to the adult team when your getting closer to your 18th, which is what they are doing with me now. another good thing about CAHMS is that if they think you need additional support they will call the I2I team which stands for introduction to intervention i have a councellor from that team they are really good.

My personal experience with CAMHS hasn't been good at all. Though I'm changing CAMHS team so hopefully they'll be better! I don't think your parents have to be in the room with you if you don't want them to be. You'll have to ask. They'll just ask you questions and stuff, sorta of a 'get to know you' thing. It'll be fine, I'm sure. xo.

how old are you?
ive not had a good experience with CAMHS but others have had good ones.

I hope they are good. To be honest the CAMHS man that refferd me kinda scared me in hospital he was generally not interested in the reason why i was in hospital and things and how i felt just more of if i could do my college work? Haha i hope it goes okay? eee.

It has a lot to do with where you live as to how good the service is i've found. When i was first referred to them in Berkshire they were utterly useless ,but then when i moved to warwickshire the service was a lot different and i had a much better experience. Also depends on who you are seeing and what for generally.

If you're 17 and going to be continuing to see them they will probably transfer you to adult services fairly soon, they started my move over about 5/6 months after my 17th birthday.. im currently mid between camhs and CMHT.

As for what happens.. just what other people have said. They will do an initial asessment , (basically ask lots of questions about your lifestyle , friends , education , and stuff about your problems etc)
Your parents will probably be in there for the first 5-10 mins but im sure if you ask they will talk to them seperatly.
