Is there anyone who knows about IP adresses?

right well here it goes .... well im in this situation(i cant go into detail) but does anyone know if more than one computer can have the same IP as me?? somethings happened that totally wasnt me and who ever it was has the same IP as me. surely this cant be possible could it???????

computers which share the same internet connection will have the same IP address.
Other than that, you can have the same IP address as another computer, but not at the same time. When your modem resets, your IP address will probably change, then if someone who uses the same ISP as you resets their modem, they might get your old IP address.

so say... im in scotland which i am, can someone have the same ip as me like 10 miles away or would it have to be the same internet connection?? as my IP is coming up in something but that thing that has happened wasnt me you see, so something funny is going on?? and it cant be no one in my house as im the only one who goes on my computer as i live with my gran, and i dont let anyone else on it, its also the only computer in the house.

It actually depends on your internet provider. For example, some companies have 100 IP addresses that they use. People are assigned the first available IP address when they log in, no matter where they physically are. So if someone in Texas and someone in London both use the same company, they could have the same IP address.

What internet company do you use?

i use virgin broadband media, well my internet is through them anyway my IP renews everytime i repair my internet connection

Every device that is connected to the internet is given a unique IP adress that can be used to track the location of the user. Bassically there are only so mnay IPs out there that you are given one at random, then next time you are given a different one, so someone will have the same IP as you, but not at the same time as you have it.

It would be highly unlikely that you would have the same ip as someone 10 miles away with virgin. Is this an ryl thing? Maybe worth speaking to a mod?

not to be rude or anything, i have issues with this myself, is there any chance you could have dissociated and done whatever it was? like you dont remember it? sometimes people kinda separate from themselves due to stress/trauma and such and can do weird things they might not do and then not remember it. not saying it's the case, but if you know you've dissociated in the past, it's a possibility.

from what i understand ip addresses are fairly reliable. and the chances of someone having your exact ip address and going ryl and doing something questionable is fairly unlikely. is there any chance someone could be messing with your computer? anyone at all? cause that's another possibility.

i don't know if it's possible to hack an ip address or not, but that would suggest someone is really trying to hurt you, which is unlikely unless you know of someone in specific who has some pretty good computer skills.

hope you get it sorted. and if it was the case that you did it and don't remember, don't feel bad. sometimes things happen that we can't control. but if you really think that there's no way you did it, then you might call the internet company and ask them if they can help at all.

Someone can use your computer and internet if you are infected with trojans etc. A trojan can get on your computer and then send for more malware. Then your computer can be used as a "bot" - short for robot. People have been busted for crimes they didn't commit but their computers were involved in unknown to owner. I would re-install operating system if I were you. Anti-virus misses lots of things.

i have 2 ip addresses, my own computer's IP address and the router's 'mask' IP address that is given out to everyone who uses the router/online firewall. some sites can tell the difference, some can't. if you go on a 'what's my ip' kinda website, i've found they usually give the masked IP out (me and my brother tried it together) and then if you go on command prompt (in accesories) and tap in 'ipconfig' and hit enter it should come up with all your details then and you can compare what you get.
