[ame="http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=SpIgI1L3EAQ"]YouTube - Peta - Veggie Love - Superbowl Ad - 2009[/ame]
this advert was banned from the superbowl in america.
what do you guys think? good/bad? apropriate/inapropriate?
as a vegetarian i think it's awesome!
(btw i hope this isn't against any rules but no doubt the mods will remove it if it is- there is no nudity though and brocolli is only slightly sexy hehe)
Well, as an American I'm not thinking that they'd have too much success running that during the Super Bowl anyway (lots of people have big chicken wing & beer parties, or similar) as that event is not really catering to PETA's target demographic.
And as a scientist, I want to know what studies they're talking about. I'm skeptical of the sex claim, and would like to read the papers on it. 'Course, I'm not wild about PETA anyway... I work in fisheries and apparently I don't work with trout or salmon, I work with sea kittens. So their credibility isn't the highest with me, or with a lot of people, you know?
I think that going vegetarian or vegan is a good idea, and was vegetarian myself for a while. But I fail to see how this particular advert would have drawn PETA an audience or made substantial differences in the number of vegetarians and vegans in the United States.

I was working on some paperwork the other day and one of my coworkers came in (she does the same fishy job as I do) and started meowing at me and calling me a kitty killer. When I asked her what she was talking about, she told me about the PETA campaign... we both told our boss and she thought it was hilarious, not least because she used to work for the USFWS as a "kitten hunter".

I suppose PETA have had MUCH worse campaigns. I'm a veggie but I also believe in farming. I stand highly for animal welfare but I also know lab work needs to go on for the goodness of everyone and people keep animals for a variety of reasons.
I used to be a bit against lab animals though I have been around a lab and the conditions were much better than I imagined & they weren't treated cruelly. Much of the campaigns/ pics that PETA (and such demonstrative companies) use are from the 1970s... slightly out-dated and why, because there isn't really anything that could shock them now.
A lot of their campaigns make little sense to. I don't know whether it was PETA or a similar organisation but one let minks from a fur farm (which I disagree with but anyway) out in the middle of the night when they raided the farm and so let them 'free'. Now this is totally counter productive as all it ended up doing was having a lot die becuse they're not able to properly fend for themselves as well as having all the local wildlife diminish... It's not the right way to campaign
So... though I hate PETA and most of their campaigns at least this one isn't made to guilt trip anyone or based on hurting someone or something in some way.
Though the study that veggies have better sex; interesting that no study was cited in the ad and there would have to be (at least in the UK)... But being a veggie myself I'm not going to say I disagree ;)
I'm not overly into the ad, but that's because it's targeting people who watch the superbowl and not weird hippy me. I love the idea though and support PETA as much as I can, I'm all for animal rights and am vegan.

How could you become as awesome as you are and still feel like a loser?
Wasn't there a report that PETA had killed loads of dogs and put them in a bin because they had nowhere for them!? I've never looked into PETA but from what I've heard they suck!
PETA have released animals from labs which is counter-productive as these animals will often succumb to any infection they can. They also kill people involved in such things.
I'm very much into animal rights but activism isn't the way to show that. To be entering the career I have I have to support animal rights but if I was into activism I think I would get pretty much kicked out of college straight away.
A lot of it makes no sense anyway. They test drugs on animals. Yep that may not be good and it goes to save peoples lives. Now without going into labs people cannot know for sure what it is like and I am not going to discuss this here but the things they find out from animals for humans are also then extrapolated to be used in animals if there were a need.
Labs don't just test drugs on animals neither and not all experiments are based in labs. And the animals are well looked after.
I am against primates being in labs. I also don't like some other animals being in them but they do a lot of good and trust me, a lot of the mice they breed in labs wouldn't live more than a couple of days out in the wild even if they were able to catch their foor and these aren't the ones that are given a certain illness/ tested. Animals at least in the UK in labs are put to sleep at any sign of discomfort; if not then the lab gets shut down. It is as simple as that; PETA don't mention that because that is a positive thing. They also still seem to go on about cosmetics being tested etc... these are outdated principles; propaganda and nothing more. Viva do the same though theres are more up to date.
Killing/ stalking people because they work in labs is totally outrageous but this is what organisations like PETA do
That was a bit disturbing. Consdiering lots of kids watch that I think it's good they took it off. I could see it being aired at like midnight on certain channels though.
I don't really see why that was banned when there are so many sexual things on TV anyway!
But I suppose the banning is cool with me, just because I think PETA is annoying. I have no problem with veggies/vegans, but extremists of any kind get on my nerves.
And as a scientist, I want to know what studies they're talking about. I'm skeptical of the sex claim, and would like to read the papers on it. 'Course, I'm not wild about PETA anyway.
^^this.
Although the ad did make me laugh, though I disagree with it. Though that was a sexy bit of brocoli, I'd like to sink my teeth into that.
Wake me up before I change again
Remind me the story that I won't get insane
Tell me why it's always the same
Explain me the reason why I'm so much in pain.
pfffft!! That is an amusing advert, although I thought being vegetarian was a personal choice not something that can be 'sold' to you. PETA are just weird!
