Can i ask for your advice/opinion? *Possible abuse trigger*

Hi , this could be a long one..

well im 17 and my pyschatrist has been discussing me switching to adult services in the next month or so... Which i was getting used to the idea of , new pysch going through it all again etc.

Then when i saw him today he said.. well if your going to find it difficult to switch maybe we could just discharge you from MH services and you can go for check ups with the GP. My Gp us utterly useless tbh.

He said i should think about it and he'll leave it up to me to decide what i think is best. Having BPD.. i hate making decisions.. and this is a tough one. I only came out of being a full time inpatient in June.. *i know it seems ages.. *..

On the good side , I'd love to move on and forget about the abuse i suffered as a child , move on from the mental health service and itd be like closing a door.

but as some of you know My BPD is very unpredictable and i can have a bad patch within hours of feeling great.. the dissociation causes me to do some pretty stupid stuff and if im honest im pretty scared that if i get discharged when (IF) I have another bad patch itll be really hard to get any support , theres a huge wating list for adult services in this area , at least if im reffered the help is still there if i need it. But i feel like a bit of a fraud just having them as a safety net.

another point is that when i have sessions with my pyschatrist..i really struggle to talk about my past and the abuse etc.. so as he said is there any point me carrying on with it... but then when i do feel ready to talk about it i wont be able to... if you get the gist,

i dont want to be an attention seeker and waste their time by staying with the mh services simply because im scared to go it alone after ive only just had such a bad patch (where i ended up in ICU and having to have an operation because id Sh'd so badly).. it just seems risky.. blehh confused much.

Sorry that was long i just wandered..
What would you do?

To be honest I think it would be best for you to accept the transfer to adult services. I know how long the waiting times can be (same CMHT as you I think). BPD can be a really volatile illness and it seems silly to take a risk when you have recently had a bad patch. You could always take the transfer and then just see the CMHT less frequently, at least then you have the option of support there. The problems are unlikely to go away because you ignore them.

This is just my opinion though, you obviously know yourself better than anyone else.

If I were in your shoes I would get tranferred to adult services and see them as you need to.

As you said, if you get discharged and you need to see someone it will take ages.

Having them as a safety net is actually a very good idea.

it seems pretty early to be discharged totally from mental health servies to be honest, especially with something as unpredictable as BPD. maybe you could talk to the new psych about getting help in the community like seeing a CPN (Community Psychiatric Nurse) on a regular basis? that might be a good way to wean yourself off support if and when you feel ready but without being discharged totally
take care

Even if there is a long waiting list for the adult services, I think you should get referred and accept the help anyway. You say that you find it hard to talk about your past but that will come in time. It's better to have support even if you are doing ok at the time instead of saying your fine and then having a crisis with no one to help you. You will not be wasting anyones time.

severing all ties with the local mental health team seems like a realy bad idea. is there any way you could be transfered to the adult books, but not see people so often?

is it just the psychiatrist that may not continue? a friend of mine has a cpn and a psychotherapist, but she gets her meds from the gp and doesn't see a psych (some psychs do noting but push pills anyway). she has, however, been told that in a crisis having her CPN will get her into crisis services just as easily.

thankyou for the replys... I think i'm going to discuss it with him when i next go and tell him i dont mind being reffered

it seems silly to risk having no support , maybe with a new pyschatrist i would feel more able to talk about things i have been seeing this one for 3 years! and i would know its more confidential.

Thankyou again for taking the time to reply =]

Hey sorry i know im late here!

But i just read your last post and wanted to say i think your heading the right way with this one and also that i agree with you and the others too.

Discuss it with him and it has to be your decision but it may be best to accept the referral at least for now it seems.

It just occurs to me that its better to have something there and then not need it [then they can discharge you later if necessary] rather than get in a crisis and have nothing or very little if you see what i mean.

Good luck and i hope that you arent feeling too bad.

i do not always manage to be around but i wish you all the very best - love and luck to you all!
