I've noticed that in some people's signatures they have widgits (Little... application/picturey type things, I think widgit is it computer term for them), from a company called Danasoft.
These have your IP computer number on them. If, you go on to further tracking and go to the website, you find out that you're anonymous, and everyone sees their own computer address and whatnot, but that takes a decent amount of effort. (Not really, but, when you're scared stiff, trying to locate the site and then type it in is rather difficult...)
Anyway, my question/comment/complaint, is that I think that these shouldn't be allowed on RYL, due to the fact that this site has a lot of mentally unhealthy people, and causing extra paranoia, is not a good thing. When I first saw someone with this thing in their signature, I went into hysterics, and off on a whole mental breakdown that RYL was out to get me, and it was all just the government trying to find a reason to take me away from my mother. It was... it was not a good scene.
So, yeah. If I knew how to make a pole, I would make a pole as to what people think of these applications, but, I don't know how to make a pole, so I'll just ask for opinions. Do you think that the Danasoft application is detrimental/should be banned?
I think they're fine.
Anyone could find those things out if they try hard enough.
But it makes you feel better, it always gets mine wrong.
Well, nearly always.
Also, IP's are shown to every site, and they do say;
These signs are created and served by our webserver in real-time for each person that views them. Your IP address and other information are only visible to YOU, not to others, but because people see their own IP address and computer information displayed on a blog or in a public forum, they think that their information can be seen by everyone!
I've reported them to for basically the exact same reason.
Well it breaks my heart to see you this way,
The beauty in life, where's it gone?
And somebody told me you were doing okay,
Somehow I guess they were wrong.
"The cool thing about this graphic is that when people see it, they think their private information (like their city or IP address) is being publicly shown on your Myspace background, layout, blog, or forum, and they think that other people can see their private info! Their first thought is, "hey, how did my IP address get on this website?!", or "why is this website telling people where are live?!" In reality, they are the only one that can see their private info, because the graphic is created in real-time for each person who sees is."
Yeah I must agree I don't actually think that is that cool - on a site that ancourages anonymity and opening up for people who are understandably very sensitive about what they are discussing.
I honestly think it's a bit cruel for a member to play this 'trick' on other members - doesnt make for a cool sig at all IMHO!
In reality it isnt doing anything big or clever at all, and isnt actually risking anyones security at all - but still, bad taste I feel.
