Sectioning
I know it may seem like a dumb question, but can people in the US be sectioned and if they can be, do they have to pay to stay in hospital while they are sectioned?

In the US it's not called sectioning(call involuntary commitment). But it's the same principal. You're involuntarily hospitalized for a certain time. And yes, even if you're involuntarily hospitalized you do have to pay the bill...unless you qualify for some "charity care" or whatever it may be called.
Oh, and, the involuntary commitment is typically no longer than 72 hours. This is partly because the act of I/C was ruled unconstitutional and in violation of Constitutional rights. Within the 72 hours, 2 psychiatrists must agree and judge whether the person is going to stay for longer. There is also a hearing in court to decide, in which case the patient can appeal the psychiatrists decision. In the US, the average hospital stay for an acute crisis is normally no longer than a week or two. Rarely, only in extreme cases, does hospitalization last for months.

I don't know about the US but I know here in the UK you do not pay if you've been detained under the Mental Health Act (just been learning this for my law exam!) as you've been forced to do it so they can't make you pay. But obviously we have the NHS over here so don't know if it changes where you have to pay medical expenses....so pretty much a useless reply from me, sorry x

You can be sectioned (and it is called that sometimes) in the US but only by a medical doctor. And because it is the U.S., you do have to pay for any services even involuntary.
