i do not always manage to be around but i wish you all the very best - love and luck to you all!
Depression by nature makes us believe that we can't recover- feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness- its like when you're at the bottom of a pit you can't see the way out. But the truth is, there are no extremes that are one ended: dark and light, happy and sad, they all coexist so even when you feel like the world is very black, there is always the positive and the happy somewhere.
You can get better Laura, and you will. You are no less able than the people on here and around the world who have sucessfully beaten depression. There is no difference that says you can't and they can. But its about making choices, having the right support around you to give you the courage and the strength to get through. And right now, you're in a new environment, you're coping with the big and scary change of university and new people who may not be in the best position to offer you the support you need, so its understandable you're on a low- and thats before you account for the grief.
Try and make use of the people around you- your doctors, tutors, the counselling service. They are there to listen and to help you feel less alone. You deserve to get better. You can get better. And I do not doubt for a min that you have the strength to come through.
Depression makes us feel like there's no way out, we're stuck in a pit and we're basically screwed. The darkness suffocates us and it feels like no-one realises how bad it's getting
I've watched my aunt battle depression for as long as I can remember, and I'm struggling with bouts of it myself and I can tell you that it is very hard work to recover, but it is possible
She's survived and she's coping. She lives a normal life and has two beautiful baby boys now.
Make use of the people around you, they're all there to help, the help lines, the doctors and the counsellors. And us. At least one of us has gone through what you're going through and lived to tell the tale.
Depression IS treatable sweetie, it's hard work and you want to give up a lot of the time, but you can get better and you deserve to get better.
Keep your head above the water and just keep swimming sweetie. (}) Stay safe. xo
having suffered from severe chronic depression myself, i can say that it is possible to recover. it took a lot of hard work, though, and it was pretty dark for a while. today i can honestly say i feel like a different person. am i cured? i don't think i'll ever be cured. am i as prepared as i can be for whatever happens in my life? yes, i am. and if life gets to be too much, i now know what i need to do to take care of myself.
why would you help clean me up if i'm the mess you never made?
It is treatable, it is possible to recover, and there is life after this illness.
I would never have believed it myself, and having been diagnosed with it I always wondered what the point in trying was if it's chornic and rah rah. But, oh man, it gets so much better. Please, hold on.
And remember, recovery doesn't always look like how you expected it too.
And, even if your symptoms don't go away entirely, recovery can mean that you're better able to hold and manage those symptoms and that they impact on your life less.
