What exactly are families?

I might sound kind of stupid asking this but what is an RYL family?
Does it just mean that you're friends with those people?
Lots of peole seem to want one, but I don't really see what the big thing is about.

Its from the older days of RYL really, they are friends of the person. So for example in my sig I just have Tanya because she rocks my socks, but if she was in my family it might say Tanya is my potato munching cousin.
Its just a way of showing affection really.

It doesn't actually *mean* anything, and it's nothing official, just a bit of fun.

Thank you, I wasn't sure whether it meant everyone was best friends or something with their family. I think I'd like a potato muching cousin, it sounds good =]

there used to be a family thread in f&d, where you could "pick up" members of family. so you'd say "does anybody want to be my potato munching cousin?"
&someone would reply with "yes. i'd like to be your potato munching cousin."
&so that person would then have a potato munching cousin. which would usually go in their sig. along with a hundred others, all in ridiculously bright diff. colours.

tbh. i think theyre useless. i've never had, or will get, a family.
i prefer to make friends the good ol' fashion way of conversation.
