Triggering (SI) - Antidepressants?
Ok i haven't been on here for a while so i feel a smidge guilty asking for advice but not sure who else to ask.
I've been feeling really down for over 6 months now, not sleeping, crap appetite and lost weight, can't be bothered with things and of course the cutting again.
People keep suggesting i see my gp but i didn't want that so i sought out private therapy but now i don't really feel thats helping much either and moneys now crap so i might have to stop anyway. But i just feel i'm getting worse rather than better, trying to be 'perky' so i don't piss everyone off is exhausting and some days i really really have to talk myself into even getting out of bed.
I had always said that i wouldn't take any meds but i'm not sure how long i can keep all this up and am now thinking it might even help.
What are peoples experiences with telling their gp, getting medical help etc? And is it even characterised as depression after 6 months? (i know people suffer a lot longer before getting help). Sometimes i feel like such a fraud like i should just be able to get up and get on with things without whining, and other times a just feel like i can't.
Sorry for the winge, any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks x

hi there,
for me, the anti d's just help the chemicals in my brain to "stay somewhat stable". they do help.
therapy helps most in conjuction with meds.
hope that helped a bit.

Depression does not have to mean AD's. Let me put that another way: The successful treatment of depression does not have to include the administering and taking of Anti-depressants.
Depression can be treated by therapy alone, alongside a good diet and excercise and a will and desire to get better.
However, sometimes the combating of depression needs a little augmentation in the form of AD's. Ad's WONT cure depression. however they can stabilise your mood sufficiently so that you are able to function better and be in a better place to receive therapies etc.
From what you describe you sound depressed. I would make an appointment with the doc. Before you go make sure to write down all the symptoms you have been feeling and timescales if you can. dont be afraid to tell him your fears and the whole thing about being a fraud. Its all important and relevant.
Notes are good because the human condition seems to have this amazing knack of ariving at the docs feeling tip-top and in fine fettle and we can never actually relate to how crap we have been feeling. Notes help alot with this.
At the end of the day you have nothing to lose. You have the choice whether to take medication or not. You can try it for a while and see how you get on. Be aware that the symptoms can get worse initially and that you may have to try many varieties until one works for you. Or you could be lucky and get the right one first time. regardless of what happens you will always have the choice to stop if needed.
The doc could also put you in contact with other services that could help also.
good luck
Matthew

Thank you Matthew, i have been really apprehensive about going to my gp or the thought of antidepressants, but i feel i might be doing the right thing now. I've been trying counselling and trying to get exercise and eat better etc, but its hard when you've no appetite. Thank you for taking the time to reply and for your advice x
